New job....unsure about a few things

Hi all. I recently got a job as a manager at a grocery store in our city. It’s much closer, better hours better insurance and same pay as my other job so I decided to take it.

I do have two issues that I’d like to bring up here.

#1: We have store brand soft drinks in a 12 pack. These things tear pretty easily and we end up with a ton a drinks that we have to repackage and sell at discount. On my first day on the job, which was a week ago. Our Store Manager grabs one of the loose drinks and opens it and starts drinking it. He tells me that just as long as employees drink these in the backroom, we can have as many as we want. I don’t know how I feel about this. I mean, my direct supervisor is telling me it’s ok, but I’m thinking it’s stealing because we also sells these drinks individually for a quarter in the store.

#2: As I’m doing my routine checks in the store, a lady comes up to my and asks where the condoms are. I took her to the aisle and helped her find the ones she needed. I felt bad afterwards that I helped someone buy this, but it IS my job. So, I’m lost.

Can anyone give me advice?

Your new job sounds like a great blessing from our Holy Father. I for one, worked in a supermarket for 4 years. Constantly running in and out in the hot/cold, and stocking and unloading trucks can really get to your workers. They deserve a nice cold drink especially for all the hard work they do (at most likely minimum wage) at least I know it made everyone happier and presented a better work environment at the store I worked at. It’s only 25 cents… I vacuum up way more than that at my current car cleaning job. As for the condoms thing, you are entitled to do your job. It wasn’t you that MADE her buy the condoms. She was going to buy them regardless you or someone else helped her find them. Condoms are part of inventory and the only thing you can do is pray for her. That’s my :twocents: hope it helps.

Definetely talk tohe person in charge. Chances are this would be considered stealing, and if it is, the company needs to know this is going on.

Yes, an unfortunate part about working for mininum wage or working period. There are times when you need to compromise your beliefs to adhere to the workplace policy. Just ask yourself how much that will influence you. If you feel that you can not live with yourself having to do it, find another job. God would provide.

Simple. #1 Don’t participate in part one and inform a head manager. #2 do your job or quit. Just as in the military do your job soldier.

I worked for 2.5 years in the kitchen of an immigrant-family owned Italian restaurant. We sold drinks for… I dunno, around $1.50. As a member of the staff, I could drink as much as I wanted for free, and generally we had 2 free meals per full shift (breakfast was excluded since we always started work after breakfast time). Certain menu items had to be purchased at cost and were taken out of our checks.

If your Store Manager is saying the employees can drink for free, then where is the issue?

He said drink it in the breakroom/backroom of the store, not take it home for the kids and wife. Sounds like a good manager who is looking out for the overall productivity and happiness of his employees. I guarantee the store indeed profits off such an arrangement, as it keeps employees from having to spend money for what amounts to a damaged item.

As to the condoms, well, did you take the job knowing the store sells condoms and as an employee you might have to order, stock, direct customers or sell the items to them?

If yes, and this truly bothers you, either quit or suck it up.

And of course, consult with your priest.

If your supervisor tells you the soft drinks are available to employees, free, what is your problem with that? The next time someone asks you where the condoms are, tell them aisle #4 and leave it at that. If someone asks you where the bread is located, would not take them there and help select a variety for french toast?

It is your job to know where things are stocked and to help customers who have questions, but you don’t necessarily have to do their shopping for them. You tell them which aisle or section, but you don’t have to walk them over to it. Next time you can say something like, “all family planning products are in aisle 5”.

Many businesses have perks like free drinks for employees. Groceries do run on pretty tight margins, so obviously you can’t stock up on free soda to take home, but you can have one during your break. If you chose not to, that’s fine also.
