For those of you interested in the Gray Book of what the Bishops voted on last year, it has been posted on the internet in several places. It can be found at the following URL.

Note that this is not the final approved version from the Vatican, but a 2006 version. For example, the words “for all” are still found in the texts. Whereas, we know that they will be changed to “for many” or “for the many”.

Any amendments that were voted on by the bishops are not automatically included and must be approved by the Vatican. Some of the proposed amendments are fairly controversial as far as the Vatican is concerned. So it remains to be seen if the Vatican caves in.

Does anyone know if there will be an updated translation of the apostles creed? I know it is not usually used at mass but I believe it can be used at baptisms and is therefore part of the text that will eventually need translation. I know there was a big fight over the Nicene creed but I haven’t heard anything about the apostles creed… anyone?

The Vatican has stated a preference for a single translation for all English speaking countries, so it will remain to be seen if the Vatican approves any country specific changes.

The Apostles Creed can be used at any Mass, following the 2002 Roman Missal’s Order of Mass:
“19. Loco symboli nicaeno-constantinopolitani, praesertim tempore Quadragesimae et tempore paschali, adhiberi potest symbolum baptismale Ecclesiae Romanae sic dictum Apostolorum.”
(Missale Romanum, Libreria Editrice Vaticana, 2002, ISBN: 8820972719, page 513.)

It is saying that the Apostles Creed may be used instead of the Nicene Creed, especially during Lent and Easter.

Translations of both Creeds are in another liturgical book “Rite of Christian Initation of Adults”. Say the Roman Missal translation is approved in 2 years, 2009. What happens to the RCIA liturgical book? Paste in new translations? Proably a new translation of the whole book is needed, properly approved by the Vatican and Conference of Bishops. How long will that take? If it takes seven years to translate the Roman Missal, perhaps another seven years for the RCIA book.

Similarly with confirmation.
“27. … The bishop says:
Peace be with you.
The newly confirmed responds: And also with you.”

Do we want to change this reply to “And with your spirit.”? Use White-Out? No need a new translation. Another seven years?

Do we follow the approved translations in these liturgical books. Have a different creed for RCIA ceremony to the Mass? Or do we delay the introduction of the new translation of the Mass until there is also a new translation of the RCIA and Confirmation? Time will tell.
