New Missal

I know this has probably been discussed already … just can’t seem to get my search strings to cooperate! I have heard on several occasions that there is a new Missal that is coming out. It is supposed to correct things such as the “pro multis” translation and the thrice receited “mea culpa” in the Confiteor, fewer options in terms of Eucharistic prayers, etc. A couple of questions about this:

When is this new Missal due to be released?

Is it an entirely new Missal or just a better translation from the Latin than the 1970 Missal?

What changes are going to be included?

There is supposed to be a new English translation for the 1970 Missal coming out in a couple years for the United States. It will hopefully correct the current translation which is very faulty.

RomanRevert, the ICEL has prepared a new English translation of the Roman Missal to comply with Liturgiam authenticam which demanded more accurate translations of liturgical texts.

It probably won’t be promulgated to the US church until Advent 2008 (or maybe even Advent 2009).

If you google hard for ICEL gray book you may find a draft version of the missal somewhere online.

As far as I know, since this is simply a new translation of the third edition of the Pauline missal (2002), there will be no reduction in the amount of Eucharistic prayers. The 2002 missal’s Confiteor has the thrice mea culpa, so it would follow it should appear thrice in the new English translation:

Confíteor Deo omnipoténti et vobis, fratres, quia peccávi nimis cogitatióne, verbo, ópere et omissióne: et, percutientes sibi pectus, dicunt: mea culpa, mea culpa, mea máxima culpa. Deinde prosequuntur: Ideo precor beátam Maríam semper Vírginem, omnes Angelos et Sanctos, et vos, fratres, oráre pro me ad Dóminum Deum nostrum.

The earliest it will probably be promulgated in 2009 but in reality won’t be ready to use until 2010. That is from the most recent FDLC meeting.

Not to sound cynical but I wouldn’t hold my breath for any significant changes. Do you really think the congregation will reply “and with your spirit” when they’ve been so very heavily conditioned with “and also with you” after all these years? On the other hand, they may hold those mini-classes before Mass starts, same as when they were teaching us those new songs. That always brought in the crowds early. NOT.

The translation is coming – it would be throwing away 5+ years of work on it if it weren’t going to be promulgated. The only way a congregation wouldn’t make the changes would be to stand directly in opposition to their bishop, the most liberal of whom aren’t likely to oppose the new translation. It’ll happen.
