Just wondering, when is the new order of Mass supposed to take place? What will be the changes? Thank you.

But that will only give us one year of enjoying the new liturgy before the world ends :rotfl:

I believe the date is Nov 27, 2011. Our priest has been teaching in his sermons about some of the changes. He is informing us that the intent is to return to the true and accurate “words” that have been changed over time.
For example, the word “cup” will be changed to “chalice” in the consecration of the wine into HIS blood. Back in JESUS time, “chalice” was the proper word, not “cup”.

@rfrr56: It’s not a new order of Mass (that’s what Novus Ordo means), but rather a revised, more accurate (well, maybe just accurate, at all…but i digress) translation of the official Latin. The original (now lame-duck) translation was of the 1970 Missale Romanum. The editio tertia Missalis Romani was promulgated in 2002, and the new translation is a translation of that editio. (That doesn’t make the 1973 one any more accurate, though). Btw I’m not bashing the '73 translation, I just disagree with the translational principles they used.

I think this would also be a great time for the Church to correct some of the things that have been going on…like holding hands during the our father, coming forward for blessings in the communion line, etc…now is the time.

usccb.org/romanmissal/ really has some good resources. I printed out a copy of the old/new comparison for an older priest without Internet access. Last Sunday in the sacristy my pastor thanked me for finding the resource. He said he was looking forward to a very smooth implementation.

I chuckled sarcastically and said that we weren’t even saying the current words correctly. That a large number of the faithful were still substituting “God” for “his” in the Gloria and the Suscipiat Dominus in an attempt to neuter the Mass. He actually said "I wouldn’t know about that."

REALLY father?!? I looked him in the eye, then looked at my watch and said “listen carefully in about 15 minutes during the Mass you are about to celebrate.”

With the high level of apathy and denial, this implementation is going to be a train wreck in my parish…

I wrote two letters to the editor that appeared in the Thursday and Friday editions of my local secular newspaper. I purposely timed the submission to coincide with the Holy Father’s visit to the United Kingdom because last Thursday marked the first time that the English-speaking world got to listen to the revised Gloria, Sanctus and Memorial Acclamation. These are part of the Mass of Blessed John Henry Newman, a setting commissioned precisely for the Holy Father’s visit and the Beatification of John Henry Cardinal Newman.

I have received some facebook messages, emails and telephone calls from folks who have read my letters. On the whole, the response has been quite positive. Even the diocesan director of youth ministry wants to start training the young people on the reviseed texts. My pastor is about the only one who has taken the initiative to get these in the hands of our parishioners. He ordered some booklets that have been distributed and he has encouraged the faithful to take a copy home with them.

From what I understand, the revised Roman Missal will be over 1,000 pages. This will factor in the new blesseds and saints that were canonized and beatified since the last time the Roman Missal was revised (second typical edition; we are now in the third).

If you scroll through these threads, you will find my “Article on the Revised Translation” thread. You can read the letters in their entirety there.

Maybe, maybe not. This is a new translation, not a new GIRM. If there is catechesis about the translation it may also include instruction about other parts of the Mass, but they really are two separate things.

As with hand-holding and other things, there’s a limit to how much you can control other people. I have control over myself and what I do and if I’m a parent, I may be able to control what my children do. Beyond that, there’s not much I can do about someone else’s behavior.

Somehow I doubt that a new translation is going to get everyone to behave the way I want them to!

I’ve mostly learned that it’s better for my spiritual health to focus on the priest and on my own behavior than to get upset over what other people do at Mass. Sometimes all you can do is say “thank you, Lord, for this opportunity to practice patience…and do you think maybe I’ve had enough opportunities for the moment?”

Wow, I didn’t realize I’d get so many wonderful responses. Thanks everyone. This has been quite helpful. Yes, I stand corrected – not “New Order”, rather “revised”.
I know when I originally read of changes a few years back there were some items I was happy to see (such as going back to the original “I am not worthy that you should come under my roof…”, and one or two other items I wasn’t happy about (I can’t remember what they were at the moment), and most items I was neutral about. But, thanks for all of the responses. Let’s see some more!!
