Has anyone seen the new “Pride and Prejudice” yet? How did it compare to the A&E version?

**I haven’t seen it yet, but I read a few reviews. Have to admit though, Colin Firth is still the ULTIMATE Mr. Darcy. I could watch the A&E version time and again.

I’ll be seeing the new version this coming week. Kiera Knightly is a terrific actress and I hope I enjoy this version at least almost as much as the other.**

I want to see it. I think it looks pretty good. I love a good love story, and I like whats-her-name who plays the lead actress. :o

WARNING! Do not go see this movie! My sister was one of the people that got to preview and rate it. She has read almost every Jane Austen book in existence, and she said the movie was horrible. It didn’t follow the book properly, and hollywood definantly added some bad things. DON’T GO !

Wow, I just popped out here from posting on “What Book Are You Reading?” And guess what I’m reading? 🙂 I haven’t seen the new movie, nor any other. But I did hear from some people who are big Austen fans that they changed it drastically, and that Hollywood opted to put in some racy scenes.

I love the A&E version!! I can’t tell you how awful it was all those years ago to be left hanging after Mr. Darcy proposed that time at the rectory. I had to wait for the rest. I nearly died.:bounce: (I saw it in parts).

Nothing can top it, I’m sure!

I loved this movie. Yes there are some slight differences between Jane Austen’s book and this movie, but I loved it. Very pure, innocent and virtuous. Even my husband liked it.

That makes me sad . . . I am a Jane Austin fan and was REALLY looking forward to the new movie. Can you provide more details about how they departed from the book, especially what “bad things” they added?

Yay! My excitement is restored. :bounce:

I’ve heard there are two different endings. One for most of the world where it ends where the book ends, and one for the American market where it ends with a love scene on the balcony at Pemberly - yes really! I’m not making this up.

That doesn’t surprise me in the least. Americans do tend to want romance to trump all, which is decidedly not the message of Austen’s book. 😛 Still, no film interpretation is the book no matter how good. The recent LOTR trilogy proves that–as good as it was. I’ll probably wait until P&P comes out on DVD. Going to the movies is difficult for me so I only go to a theater to see films I just can’t wait to see, like the upcoming Narnia: LWW.

The love scene is pretty tame. It just has them talking about how happy they are. He then kisses her face, and then puts his lips on hers, and the movie ends. The last kiss seemed more old hollywood.

The Jane Austen Society has really pooh poohed this new version. Jane Austen is easy enough to film (no battle scenes, light sabers, etc) and why not follow the book?

As far as Hollywood adding bad things, I read they “sexed it up”. Why do they think they have to do that to sell a picture?

Have you seen it? I’d really suggest you see this movie before you get all upset about it. I think the Jane Austen society is off there.

The movie does change some things. But part of it is because its a really long book, and well it would probably take a 6 hour A E version to well tell everything. So they cut out some dances etc, cut out characters like Mariah and stuff like that.

The Lord of the Rings movie did the same thing.

But its’ true to the heart of the book, and you can tell that the makers loved the book. So Darcy/Elizabeth kiss at the end, they are married. And well trust me its a pretty PG kiss

The only thing I can think they show is the big pig, and well Darcy has all these nude scupltures, kind of like the David type of Scultptures in marble. But other than that its about it.

I mean i guess they sexed it up a bit, but well really not that much. They don’t have Elizabeth/Darcy kiss until their married for goodness sake.

I thought the scene of her in the sculpture room was really funny. She is walking around looking at all these gorgeous statues and, just for a second, you see her eyes looking at a certain area (which is not shown) and you can see the wheels turning.

When she and Mr. Darcy kiss at the end, they are not wearing … shoes. Very naughty.

I thought the movie was great, but I haven’t read the book in 20 years. It seemed alive, though, and I thought Mr. Darcy was … excellent.

I’m not all upset about it at all. Just letting everyone know what the Jane Austen Society had to say about it. I just saw Mansfield Park and they were right to pan it, it was awful.

I probably will see it when it gets to my library (the only way I see movies anymore). I thought the A&E version was wonderful, excellent casting etc. And it was so true to the book. I’m not a really big fan of movies made from books, I like books better, but it is fun to see costumes and sets.

I wonder why the review I read had said that it was “sexed up”. From what you describe it doesn’t sound all that bad.

This book is not Mansfield Park, a movie which I liked but which decided to change the main character! Which in my mind meant it wasn’t really Jane Austen. The move is much truer to the story in that way.

Yes this movie is a bit more sensual than Jane Austen’s book, but its more like Romantic tension etc. I kind of liked it actually. They aren’t all over each other. Everyone is very popular throughout the movie.

I liked the A&E version. But well they had six hours. The movie makers didn’t have six hours. I enjoyed the movie.

For incredible cinematography and music the new movie is excellent. It was sensual, but tasteful. I found it was very “physical”, or “real” in its portrayal of the family. I loved the scene with Lizzy swinging on the tire in their courtyard. And the ending was well done too… Their love, in its purity and goodness, was shown in fullness in their marriage. Of course it’s romantic! Jane Austen’s novels are romantic! They’re also wise, practical, spiritual, etc… but full of love and passion.

It was a different perspective. What I always tell myself when watching a movie based on a book is that it’s the director’s interpretation of the book… If you want something word-for-word, scene-by-scene, read the book again! For a more accurate adaptation, we all know to go to A&E, Colin Firth, and Jennifer Ehle, but there’s something interesting, unique, and fresh in this new movie. I’d recommend it.
