We either need a new Catholic Seminary in Ireland or improve on what is already there…I for one would like to see new Communities of Religious set up houses in Ireland such as the Friars of the Renewal and Lumen Dei. We need you. Our young men and women are finding it hard to find a genuinely orthodox Catholic religious community who adhere to the teachings of the Church and end up lost and are like sheep without a shepherd !

I am sorry to hear this. Last time I was in Ireland (in Co. Clare) I very shocked when Sunday Mass started at 11.30 and finished before the noon bell. This included 2 readings, the Gospel and a “sermon”, if you could call it that. We flew through the prayers and there was no time for any reflection at all. However, my mother’s parish (Cobh) is a bit better. At least Mass took an hour, there was still organ music and a choir, altar rails (but the bishop is trying to remove them:( ) and Mass was well attended. I know that the local sisters (Sisters of Mercy) have a severe lack of vocations and I think this may be the case throughout the country. Are there problems at Maynooth too? Is it the only seminary in Ireland these days?

Ireland’s faith has withstood many trials over the centuries, and Ireland has been a beacon of light for the world- a shining example of the Catholic faith. So much of American Catholic heritage was once Irish. Now Ireland have a new trial. It seems the ‘enlightenment’ of the 1800’s is finally catching on, and the comforts and promised security of the modern world are convincing Ireland to forget the Church- and Mary, who is Ireland’s only queen. Somewhere along the line, my family- who is of Irish descent- lost their Catholic faith. Mary brought me back to her Son, introduced me to His Bride, the Church, and taught me to love Her- I pray she continues this work- in me, and in all.
