 Recently a friend told me about a new show advertised called the Book of Daniel. He said it was one of the worst he had ever saw about Catholics. Does anyone know about this show? When will it be aired what channel it is on? So we can send letters to the station and the advertisers of this program.

According to TV.com, it does not premier until Jan 1 on NBC. Here is part of the summary about the show:
The show focuses on an Episcopalian minister and father. He finds himself conversing with Jesus - his mentor and friend - who helps navigate family problems, church politics and even his nagging reliance on prescription painkillers.
Do not know if it will be anti-Catholic since its main character is an Episcopalian minister.

I got an e-mail from an organization that tracks this type of nonsense. The show is about a drug-addicted Episcopal priest. His wife depends heavily on her mid-day martinis. He has a 23-year-old homosexual son, a 16-year-old drug-dealing daughter, and a 16-year-old adopted son who is having sex with the bishop’s daughter. At the priest’s office his lesbian secretary is sleeping with the priest’s sister-in-law.

NBC is hailing the show as “serious drama about Christian people and Christian faith.” The show’s writer is homosexual.

Whether about Catholics or not, this show is an insult to Christianity. If you want to speak your mind about such drivel trying to be foisted off as such, you can e-mail NBC Chairman Bob Wright at:

I agree that it will probably be anti-Christian, but I was responding to the original posters question. Since I rarely watch the broadcast channels, I will probably not watch the show anyway.

I TOLD my dh that there’s be a million yahoos who hear “priest” and assume Catholic. The guy in the show is married and NOT Catholic. It’s kind of a twist like on Joan of Arc.

NBC Demeans Christian Faith
**Writer for new series is practicing homosexual

** NBC is promoting the network’s mid-season replacement series “The Book of Daniel” with language that implies it is a serious drama about Christian people and Christian faith. The main character is Daniel Webster, a drug-addicted Episcopal priest whose wife depends heavily on her mid-day martinis.

Webster regularly sees and talks with a very unconventional white-robed, bearded Jesus. The Webster family is rounded out by a 23-year-old homosexual Republican son, a 16-year-old daughter who is a drug dealer, and a 16-year-old adopted son who is having sex with the bishop’s daughter.

At the office, his lesbian secretary is sleeping with his sister-in-law.

Network hype – and the mainstream media – call it “edgy,” “challenging” and “courageous.” The hour-long limited drama series will debut January 6 with back-to-back episodes and will air on Friday nights. The writer for the series is a practicing homosexual.

The homosexual son will be network prime-time’s only regular male homosexual character in a drama series.

Please use the link below to send a letter to NBC Chairman Bob Wright.

Next, please forward this to your family and friends today!

Those at NBC responsible for this program consider it a good, religiously oriented show typical of Christian families.

One more good reason to chuck the TV right out the window. If it weren’t for videos we choose to rent I would do just that because there is almost NOTHING on broadcast TV that I would invite into my home.

Why they’d want to make this screwed-up family a “religious” one is beyond me? Oh nevermind… I know the answer to that! I fear for these writers who think it’s “edgy” to portray Christians in this way. God is not one to be mocked. :tsktsk:

Yikes! Sounds like they’re really throwing in the entire kitchen sink of offensivness to true christianity into this show!

I dont see “agendas” at every corner when it comes to gays in the media, but this show is truly agenda driven and intended.

Prediction: It wont last, Especially if this Jesus doesnt address these peoples choices and lifestyles as wrong. Mainstream viewers wont buy into it. Only the fringe who want watered down religion will see value in this tripe.

Now for playing Devils Advocate:

I truly feel that if Jesus bothered to be more specific in his teachings and viewpoints instead of us having to believe he spoke to the apostles thru the Holy Spirit after his death, and thus THEM being the ones laying out the details, mankind wouldnt have such issues about what Jesus truly meant or intended…another of Gods great ironies I guess.

Most people on these forums are smart enough to avoid this show but what about the innocent adolescent who stumbles across this?

Most children are not properly cathecised and what they watch is not monitored.

Don’t throw away your tv. Just get a dish so you can get ewtn. We subscribe to Dish TV and it is a lot better than being stuck with cable. I don’t watch any network tv other than the local news.

I know I am dreaming, but now that some cable companies are allowing subscribers to pick programming, that EWTN would be number one. That would surely blow their minds. 🙂

While the minister who is the main character is not Catholic, there is a Catholic priest in the show, called Father Frankie, who is supposed to be an Italian with mob connections. There are several cheap shots at Catholicism in the opening episode from what I have read on the internet. I am not sure if Father Frankie is supposed to be gay himself, but one quote from the show has a character saying that the Catholics would not have a Christain-like attitude toward being gay. (apparently the Jesus character and the Main minister both think it is ok.)

It sounds insulting to any number of ethnic, religious, and social groups.

I saw the commerical for this show and I was not impressed. First of all, I found it misleading saying that this show is about a “priest”, his wife and family. I said what?? Priests are not married! I do not like the direction that the networks are taking here…

Looks like there is some organized protests forming:

A pro-family group has launched a protest campaign against a new NBC drama featuring a troubled, pill-popping Episcopal priest who is the father of a dysfunctional family.

“The Book of Daniel,” written by a homosexual, is being promoted as the only show on television in which Jesus appears as a recurring character and the only network prime-time drama series with a regular male “gay” character, a 23-year-old Republican son, says the American Family Association, which has an online petition.

As an Aidan Quinn fan, I am going to check out the show, and will suspend judgement on it until I see it.
