Dear Ninan,

Many Years!

Can you please explain the hows and whys for the new diocese?

I mean, is this a completely new diocese. Is it a splitting of an existing diocese? Was HE Njaralhakkatt a newly ordained bishop, or transferred to this new diocese?

One last thing - I always keep forgetting. Is the Syro-Malabar Church of the Assyrian or Syrian Tradition?

Blessings,
Marduk

Syro-Malabar is East Syriac while Syro-Malankara is West Syriac. 😉
Thanks, bro.

But I’ll have you know that I spent the previous 15 minutes () trying to find out where the Assyrians fit in all this. After a laborious and grueling search (), I finally discovered that the Assyrians are East Syriacs.

Now, I just have to develop a system of mnemonics to help me remember.:gopray2:

:rotfl: I would have thought that you of all people already knew that the Assyrian Church (& the Chaldeans) are East Syriac. Oh well …

Assyrian Church of the EAST are EAST syrians. Just remember them by their full name!

I never actually knew of the East-West distinction until after I became Catholic. Even then, I did not immediately realize that it had jurisdictional relevance. I just knew of the ACOE. Period. :crutches:

Thank you, once again.

Thanks.🙂

Now, how about a mnemonic to remember that the Syro-Malabar is East, and Syro-Malankara is West

Bro,

Maybe a brief history will help you remember…

The West Syriacs / Arameans and Syro-Malankara are sometimes termed “Jacobites” because the Coptic Bishop Jacob Baradaeus created a parallel hierarchy in Antioch when there was a split due to the monophysite controversies.

The East Syriacs / Assyrians / Chaldeans and Syro-Malabars were in the past accused of Nestorianism…

Mandya is carved out of Karnataka state territory of Mananthavady Diocese of Kerala. The new bishop was the Vicar General and Administrator of Mananthavady and later the Vicar General of Bhadravathi Diocese.

The other 2 SMC dioceses in Karnataka state are Belthangady and Bhadravathi.

Thank you for the information. The Malabar Church must really be growing in order for a new diocese to be erected. GOOD NEWS!👍

Dear brother SyroMalankara,

THANKS! That really helps. From your info, I’ve figured out a perfect mnemonic. Check this out:

In considering the distinction between Syro-Malabar and Syro-Malankara, the letters B (in Malabar) and K (in Malankara) have always stood out in my mind.

K is right next to the letter J in the alphabet, and J stands for Jacobite.

Jacobites originated from a Coptic bishop. And Egypt is WEST of India.

Thus, therefore, hence, Syro-Malankara are WEST Syriac.

Some people are probably laughing at my circuitous mnemonic, but it works for me!😃

Thank you, once again.

Blessings

Syro-Malankara are Jacobites. I can easily remember this by the fact that “J” (in Jacobites) is followed by the letter “K” (in Malankara).
