Hoping for book recommendations
  1. I have read the New Testament but would love a companion book that could give me a simple, interesting, yet educational insight on the New Testament. The culture of the time frame, the politics that surrounded the area, the 4 gospel writers themselves, etc. I feel this would really help me understand the New Testament. For instance, I know very little about the pharasees the sadducees and figure a book that explains their origins and the geography, history, culture would be helpful. Is there a classic famous Catholic books on this?
2). A book that explains how the Canaan of the Bible came to be…I know the Bible was bound in 400ad…That’s about all I know. I don’t want anything too complex, just a simple interesting book of how the books were chosen and the good Christian who made this decision. Thanks.
3). A companion book to the Old Testament would also be good to have.

Hi Francis!

Wow, you’re asking for a lot here. The closest book to what you’re looking for may be a Commentary.

I don’t know of any “companion” books to either the Old or New Testaments. Wish I did so I could buy them for myself!

Yes Stuart, maybe I overdid it. ;-). But it seems so obvious to me that there would be a book for Catholics to help explain the New Testament to people picking it up for the first time. I’m surprised I can’t think of any. Especially a famous one, one that is highly regarded. Glad you shared my desire on that front.

Thanks…from the lack of replies I think my question should have been. “How many people giving ‘catholic answers’ here has actually read the Bible?”
