I have heard that Jesus and Paul and maybe some of the other Apostles quoted oral statements made in old testement times that do not appear in the old testement.

I would like to know where in the new testement to find these, they will aid me greatly in explaining oral Tradition in addition to the bible in an ongoing dialog with a fallen away Catholic.

I know my faith, but sadly, fall short in knowing scripture well enough to find them. 😦

Thanks for any help you can give me. 👍

Here is one

: “Just as Jannes and Jambres opposed Moses, so these *men *also oppose the truth, men of depraved mind, rejected in regard to the faith. But they will not make further progress; for their folly will be obvious to all, just as Jannes’s and Jambres’s folly was also.” 2 Timothy 3:8-9

This is an instance wherein Paul cited ancient Jewish oral tradition. Jannes and Jambres were two magicians in Pharaoh’s court who opposed Moses. The names Jannes and Jambres** does not appear** in any Old Testament book and is based on oral tradition.

You can also read Jude 9, where an account of a struggle between Satan and the archangel Michael over Moses’ body was mentioned. This is not found in any Old Testament book but only cited in Jude. This is another instance of a disciple quoting not an Old Testament book, but Jewish oral tradition.

Gerry,

Thanks for you (name removed by moderator)ut. I have written down these versers. Please list more if you think of them.

As a side note concerning my neighbor, she and I pray the Rosary together, although she prefers that we NOT include the Hail Holy Queen prayer or the Fatima prayer. I, of course say these prayers, but she does not join in. BUT SHE STILL HEARS THEM.! 👍

Matthew chapter 5. towards the end Jesus says “you have heard the commandment to love your neighbor but hate your enemy”

The last part of that commandment is not found in the Old Testament

Another quote in this vein by Paul is found in Acts 20:35…
32"Now I commit you to God and to the word of his grace, which can build you up and give you an inheritance among all those who are sanctified. 33I have not coveted anyone’s silver or gold or clothing. 34You yourselves know that these hands of mine have supplied my own needs and the needs of my companions. 35In everything I did, I showed you that by this kind of hard work we must help the weak, remembering the words the Lord Jesus himself said: 'It is more blessed to give than to receive.’ " (RSV, italics mine)
The words Paul attributes to our Lord Jesus are found nowhere in the Gospels, and represent the oral teachings of Christ to his apostles (i.e. Sacred Tradition).

Remember in John’s gospel (20:30; 21:25), we are reminded that not everything Jesus did was written down, and if it was, not even the entire world could hold all the books.

Thank you all for your help. I’m a little ashamed at myself for not knowing scriptures better. 😦

These quotes should help out alot. 👍

Note that Jesus said, “You have heard,” not “You have read.” He frequently made that distinction when He was quoting rabbinic tradition, as opposed to quoting OT scriptures themselves.
