New Time magazine

I was at the store today and saw the new Time Magazine had a front page article that said “The God Gene”. It says many scientist claim there is a gene for "believing in God and that is why people believe in a higher power…
I did not waste my $4.00 on the magazine, but wanted to know if anyone read it or had any thoughts and saw the magazine.
I am not arguing for or against it, just looking for some thoughts about it.
 
I saw something like this on one of the evening news shows a couple months ago. (60 min or 20/20 ?)

It looked scientifically accurate. It was about part of the brain that when stimulated, would give you a feeling described as very spiritual. Pretty neat for God to design our brains to be able to comprehend his presence.

Yeah that is the way I see it Just as you do)…God “engineering” us to know Him… but some people are likely to take it as fuel for the “God doesn’t exist, it is just evolution” sales pitch. since it "may not be present in some people…blah blah blah…
I fear stuff like this can take people who are shaky in belief in God in the wrong direction…

Dorothy Sayers in one of her Lord Peter Wimsey murder mysteries (Whose Body) set in the 1920s had as one of her villains a doctor, what today would be called a neurosurgeon. He was convinced concscience and religion were simply electrical impulses of the brain, activited by stimuli, that could easily be excised surgically to render people much happier and more comfortable without guilt, sin and religious impulse to seek God. Wimsey reads a review of his book in the Times and sees the truth of the way this doctor thinks, puts together all the clues and traps the murderer. So this is hardly a new idea. Knowing Sayers’ work she probably drew inspiration from ideas being promoted at the time.
 
Well, sorry, it is too late to use this info now, but Time and Newsweek both post their cover stories on the web for free. The story is available only while the issue is out, this was in last weeks issue, so you cannot access it anymore unless you subscribe. Hopefully this will be useful in the future, there really is no reason to waste 4bucks.😃

You might want to check out “Why God won’t go away” by Andrew Newman. It came out a few years ago. Fairly interesting but definitely non-religious. Not necessarily anti-religion but non religious
 
Well these kind of theories can be interpreted two ways evolution did it overcoming impossible odds. yeah right!

Or We were created this way by an intelligent designer who wants us to seek the creator. The second option is far more likley than the game of chance of the non theistic evolution stance.

I have a far more limited view of evolution myself. I actually believe each speices have evolved somewhat but don’t believe the species crossed in any way. Like we were never from the ocean or fpolywogs or frogs or monkeys or other non sense. Could we have been a more primiative form of man like neandrathol? like yeah I can see Creation worked out that way without violating the integrity of each seperate species.

This ties in with addictive thinking. That something is stimulated, or numbed, in the brain thereby causing a physical effect. I know addicts that are not open to God because they see it as just another addiction. When people are in a new relationship there is an effect on the brain. What happens after 20 years of marriage when the “good effects” wear off? Love (faith in God) is a choice that we make. Perhaps some people are attracted because of “feelings” but feelings are fleeting. Hpoefully that attraction will develop into a decision to love God, not to get another high.
 
I took the Spiritual test that they provided in the article. It’s a complete joke. It doesn’t ask about beliefs but instead asks about losing track of time and love for plants. What a waste of time…
 
I don’t know about a “God” gene, but ponder this:

God created us in His image. Why would he not plant the seed of desire in us to look upon His face? What would prevent God from using the DNA He created to accomplished that task?

Something to think about.
 
If there is a ‘God gene’ how do you explain siblings or twins one of whom believes in God & the other doesn’t.

First, of whom are you asking this question? I’m not sure anyone here believes in such a thing, per se.

Second, no one said the “God” gene - not accepted as fact on this board anyway, but let’s assume it exists - compels* belief * in God. If such a thing exists, then it would compel a search for God, a *yearning * for His love, presence, and comfort.

I know many people who yearn to know God, but are looking in the wrong places for Him. I offer gentle persuasion, nothing more.

All mankind yearns for God…whether they know it or not. He is our creator and we are merely creations. Even these scientist who want think they have discovered a “God believing gene” are looking for God and the meaning of life.
