New to NFP

Hello Everyone,

I am engaged and my future wife and I have been reading a lot about NFP. One thing I am not clear on is the Catholic Church’s teaching about intercourse during a woman’s menstrual period. Is it allowed or not? In the Old Testament in Leviticus it says such a thing is unclean but, it also says eating pork is unclean and men should grow hair from their temples. If anyone has any guidance on this I would really appreciate it. We are both looking forward to living the Church’s teachings on matrimony.

As far as I know it’s fine, as long as both spouses are comfortable with it. Some men are grossed out, and some women are in so much discomfort that they’re not interested.

I agree with SeekerJen that it is up to the two of you to decide that you are both comfortable with it. There is no teaching that says that you cannot have sex at that time. As long as you are participating in the marital embrace, being united with your wife (the unitive aspect) and open to life (the procreative aspect).

You may also want to check out “The Good News About Sex and Marriage” by Christopher West. Both you and your fiance would find it a great read in preparation for your marriage.

Leviticus does say that touching a menstruating woman is unclean, but Christ Himself touched a hemorrhaging woman in the Gospel. There is no additional restriction on marital intimacy when a woman is on her period besides what the couple is comfortable with.

My fiance and I have talked about this as well. It’s just one of those things we’re going to have to see. Every woman’s cycle is different, but at least for me, when it’s heaviest, sex would probably be the farthest thing from my mind. It would just be too uncomfortable, with cramps and everything, and probably quite messy. But for lighter days, if the mood strikes and we’re both comfortable with it…we’ll see.

Also remember with NFP that menstruation does not necessarily mean infertility. I remember seeing a chart of the different phases which was showing how the length/symptoms differed slightly in various women, and phase 2 can sometimes start before menstruation has finished. If I’m wrong on this, someone please correct me–but I think you’re supposed to keep cross-checking for other fertility signs even while menstruating.

That is true, that women can still be fertile when they menstruate.
