I’m making my New Year’s Resolution this year to follow this plan to read the entire Bible and Catechism following this plan: chnetwork.org/readguide04.pdf

As I was converting to the RCC, my Protestant brother who strongly disapproved of my conversion said that a major problem he had with Catholics is that I seemed to be the only Catholic who understood and practiced his faith, and I wasn’t even Catholic yet! I also tend to notice that we actually lose alot of followers to Evangelical Bible groups who strongly dissaprove of the Catholic faith, and that many have trouble with these Evangelicals when they accuse them of following “the traditions of men” yet the Catholic isn’t well informed about his faith.
As a convert to the RCC from a Baptist church, I would just like to say that I think this is a VERY Bible-based faith. Actually, the Bible is based off of this faith. If you feel you could further your understanding of the RCC and her teachings, then I strongly recommend doing this New Year’s Resolution with me. 👍

That being said, does it matter if I use the 1st edition of the Catechism instead of the second edition, or is one more “official” than the other? 🤷
I recommend using a study Bible like the New Jerusalem Bible or something like that for other Catholics interested, or perhaps the NAB Catholic Youth Bible. I think it’s important to get a well foot-noted Bible since it’s not exactly a face-value book. This book has gone through many cultures and has many literary devices, I think a study Bible is necessary.

Your question about the CCC 1st vs 2nd edition made me curious about the difference between the two. I realized, I really didn’t know. :o

I found this on the USCCB website:

“How does the second edition of the Catechism of the Catholic Church differ from the first edition?
The second edition differs in two ways. First, the second edition reflects the changes that were made in the final Latin text in 1997. Second, the second edition includes a new index. The glossary was also added in the American version of the second edition of the Catechism of the Catholic Church.”

So it’s really up to you about using your 1st edition.

At the end of the year you must tell us which was the toughest book to read and which was the first passage to bring a tear to your eye.
 
I started reading through my Bible (D-R/Vulgate) about two years ago. Slow and steady. I must admit I passed over some portions of Numbers, Leviticus, Deuteronomy, (where it lists the names of the tribes and their children, the laws regarding the animals, etc.) But next time I start the cycle, I plan on reading everything. My copy also has an appendix which includes the Prayer of Manasses, and 3 and 4 Esdras.

Regarding what your brother said, it does seem that way (at least it did to me). For a long time, it felt sort of lonely. The Internet has been wonderful b/c I know there are others trying to learn about the Faith, our very long history, and to be good Catholics.

An excellent resolution, good luck! I started in July on this plan with the NABRE, (I had already read most of the CCC in 2010). I devolved into just reading the O.T. from front to back tho… 😛
