I don’t know what the problem is. These people just want to have a little fun and mix it up.

I was told that everything good in this world is a gift from God. The beauty of the Earth, music, joy and love all given from God. Humor is also a good gift from God. What a drab world we would live in without humor. Now I’ve also been told that God is the culmination of everything that is good. I know God has a sense of humor. Just look at the platypus.

You’re joking, right?

I mean, don’tcha just roll on the floor laughing everytime you contemplate Calvary?

Precisely. Calvary is never a hoot.

I personally don’t give any of it much thought. I’m speaking as someone on the sidelines looking in.

One could say that Christ dying horribly on the cross is something that should be so sollumn and grim.

One could say that Christ dying is what saves them, is the act that was planned thousands of years before he was made man and should be celebrated as the single most important moment in human history. Even the announcer on the EWTN invites people to “celebrate” the daily Mass at such and such time. (Can’t remember when it runs on the affiliate station out here)

I guess I don’t understand this sense of regret I feel in people about Jesus dying. Yes, it was a terrible, painful way to die and I would never ever wish it on any of the myriad of people the Romans executed in that manner. But would you rather he didn’t and the world progressed this far without his sacrafice?

And I’m not saying we should toss cream pies around the alter and laugh. But my point was that there are more emotions that I think people refuse to attribute to “Church” other then the depressing, dark ones that are stereotypical of Catholic worship. I think in all things it’s important to have a mix.

Do you think it’s funny to hear Christ’s words at the Last Supper, “Take this all of you and eat it…” being portrayed by a clown?

Joy and solemnity are united at the font. I don’t know what Catholic liturgies you have been to that are ‘depressing and dark.’ There is a world of difference between joy and mockery. The essence of clown humor is mockery.

No. I don’t think a clown reciting a consecration is funny. A clown snapping his fingers in a giant rat-trap, now that’s funny.

But I don’t see what’s wrong with it. His heart is in the right place. I mean, what with being an educated and certified clergyman.

I haven’t been to any. I almost did once, but I was pressured out of it by my Catholic friends because they said I’d be chastised by the parishoners if I didn’t hold my head exactly so, and so on and so forth.

But it is a typical Protestant stereotype (at least one that I heard a lot growing up) of Catholics (one I don’t buy into, mind you) that Catholic worship is all dark, and somber and depressing.

Clown shoes are funny enough for me but not at Church. Would it be funny to hang a clown on a cross and have a mime imitate piercing our Lord? The clown Eucharist is in just as poor taste.

This is hogwash (as you know). But it might be something a person could feel if he rarely went to Church.

I guess a lot of people got an “education” on this throughout the papal funeral and installation events. Even the funeral Mass was joyful. Deeply, beyond laughter, JOYFUL!
