Hi y’all,

I have used in the past the modern Christian Prayer to pray the modern liturgy of the hours but now, as a traditional Catholic, I am interested in something with more tradition and some latin in it. So, I was wondering what you all could recommend for me to start praying the traditional office (in latin and/or english)

What book(s) (more inexpensive or good priced used) should I look for or get?
What websites should I look into?

Anything y’all could recommend me would be such a blessing!

Thanks,

Landon

The Modern LOTH can be prayed in Latin and even in Gregorian chant. Other than that the Monastic Office is the only really “traditional” office as it goes back to the 6th century. Both the pre- and post-Vatican II versions can be prayed in Latin ( in fact the pre- must be prayed in Latin). The Monastic Diurnal is favoured by many here. The Monastic night Office is very heavy with 12 psalms and long readings.

For the LOTH in Latin you need Liturgia Horarum. You could use your English LOTH alongside. You should use the vernacular for the readings of the Office of Readings unless you understand Latin reasonably fluently. The LOTH is shorter than either the earlier Roman Breviary or the Monastic Breviary, which may frustrate a newbie to Latin.

The traditional Office prayed in Latin only. The Baronius edition is probably your best bet as it has the English alongside it to aid in the understanding, but the English is not to be used for praying the Office itself.

I like the Benedictines of le Barroux. They record at least 6 of the hours. You can click on a link that produces Latin/English text so that you can follow along with the chant. Its beautiful.

Just use your search engine and type in “Chant of le Barroux”. 👍

Now that is a traditional Office. Been around for 1500 years. The 1960 Roman Breviary is anything but. While it carried over some traditional elements, it really is a 20th century invention (promulgated in 1910 to be exact) and has many innovations that set precedents for the 1970 LOTH.
