Hello,
This is my first time posting. I found this site about a week ago. I really enjoy the available information that is found. I’ve learned so much. Like some Catholics, I’ve never been able to defend my faith but I’m trying hard to become more knowledgeable.
I have a question that I have not been able to find an answer to. My husband goes to a Church of Christ. I am Catholic. We are fairly accepting of each others beliefs (me more than him). About twice a year he throws the typical Protestant questions at me. What I want to be able to defend is when he throws out :

1Corinth. 14: 33-35 “*As in all the congregations of the saints, women should remain silent in the churches. They are not allowed to speak but must be in submission as the Law says. If they want to inquire about something, they should ask their own husbands at home; for it is disgraceful for a woman to speak in church.” *

Any help with this question would be much appreciated.

Thanks,
TJBJ

As a Catholic, how do I defend 1 Corinthians 14:33-35 ?

Do you mean defend the notion of women speaking?

You need to explain to him that, while Scripture was inspired, it was written by men who used the context of their time periods to spread God’s message. For instance, I’ve not yet been to a Church of Christ service where women were required to wear head-coverings. Yet, 1 Corinthians 11:3-16 seems to require it. Paul was writing to a culture, that of the Corinthians, in which men dominated political, social, and religious life and women were subservient. If you husband’s church doesn’t require head coverings, ask him why they follow the verse he mentioned, but not another verse from the same epistle.

Then, lead the discussion into the fact that part of a proper exegesis of Scripture is an understanding of the historical context. Once done, we can remove the distractions and dig into the deeper meaning intended by the text. Is Paul saying that women have no role in the Church? Of course not (though in that period, they had none), but he is emphasizing that the leader of the Church, the one who “speaks” in Church is Christ and the one who serves in the place of Christ, the priest (and, to a lesser degree, the deacon). Even in the Catholic Church we only give these roles to men, partly in respect of the fact that they are speaking in persona Christi. We are still following the inspired intent of the passage he cites, but doing so in the context of the modern times.

To follow on the above post - there is a practical side of the verse in question - in that time the custom was for women to sit on one side and men on the other during worship. Paul often spoke of keeping order in services, this was one of those disorder issues - some women would speak to their husbands - who were seated in another area - during the services! This was disruptive, and the situation was addressed in Paul’s letter…

The context is within official worship (see vs. 23), and I believe that Paul was addressing the fact that only men can have positions of authority, of priest or deacon. Women can certainly teach, just not preach and offer sacrifice of the Mass.

Some passages only make sense within the realm of the Catholic Church.
