Bishop Soto has closed the three main Newman Centers attached to UC Davis, Sac State and Chico State. The students are now forced to find a parish on their own and many do not bring cars to school. My daughter attended a Jesuit university so there was no need for a Newman Center. Does anyone have any experience with the programs that the centers provide? Any information will be gratefully accepted!😉

Do you have a link? That’s truly shocking!

In my opinion, Newman Centers or Catholic campus ministries are vital for young adults in college. As you point out, on a practical level, many students don’t have transportation. In addition, campus ministries often provide places where Catholic students can meet each other, and interact in spiritual, social, and service activities.

I just looked at the religiously-oriented student groups at UC Davis. I found:

Bahai
Baptist
Buddhist
Christian Science
Coptic Christian
Jewish
Muslim
Orthodox
Seventh Day Adventist
Sikh
And a lot of generically Christian groups.

It looks like Catholics will have many opportunities to leave the Church and find fellowship elsewhere.

I’m confused, because the Centers, as I can tell have not been “closed”. At UC Davis, in 2013, Masses were moved to St. James Parish, because of a priest shortage, and the Parish was closer for many students than the center was.

Newman Center websites for UC Davis, Chico State and Sac State are up.

I’m thinking there is more to this story, and that it is not as bad as it sounds.

Peace and all good!

At Sac State there was a meeting in late April about the future of the Newman Center. It’s on their facebook page with a mention that Bishop Soto wants more students involved while at the same time wanting them to find another parish for it. There is nothing mentioned post-meeting.

Hmmm, what was the rational, was this the result of some sort of problem?
