I will be attending World Youth Day in Poland this summer, and was thinking of possible locations for the next one. It has usually been in Europe and the next one elsewhere. It will be in 2018 or 2019. I was thinking either America or the Philippines because it has been over 20 years for both.

youtube.com/watch?v=QlQ5sn2Ivqo This is a video I have come across of the possibility of it being in Atlanta. I wonder if they put a bid in. Does anybody know how bidding for WYD works and if you know of anybody who put a bid in? I know we wont know for sure until WYD, but was just curious if anybody knows anything about who might be a possibility. I heard that the people from the country of the next WYD get priority seating at the final mass, and that one time the location was announced by the people from that country before the Pope announced it. That would be cool if it was in America, that means us Americans would be sitting towards the front:D

It would be cool if it was in America. But, I don’t think you should get your hopes up based on an independent video on Youtube with barely over 900 views.

If in America, I could see it being somewhere else other than Atlanta, somewhere more fitting to such a mass of pilgrims.

It hasn’t been in Britain yet. That would be a success I think, there was a tremendous turnout for Pope Benedict’s visit in 2010.

Atlanta has the world’s largest international airport and it contains many HUGE venues.
Easy to access from other states.
We live there…not even a rumor of this anywhere. :nope:
It will probably go to some hugely Catholic state…🤷

good point, hasn’t been in Ireland either. The reason it probably won’t be in Europe is because it usually varies from Europe one time and elsewhere the next, so will probably be elsewhere since this year is in Poland.

right, they try to put WYD in a predominately catholic area, and I don’t think the Atlanta area is mostly catholic, most likely evangelical protestant like most of the south. I live in the Midwest and there is a lot of good cities that would be good for hosting it. 😃

I would like to see it go somewhere in Africa. Nigeria would be good, but the security concerns could prevent a large turnout. India, Korea or somewhere else in Asia would be good too.

It would have to go somewhere where the immunization requirements wouldn’t really big. Our parish missionaries just went to Haiti and the cost of the shots really upped the ante.

England or Ireland is a good choice, but I doubt Ireland has the funds to put this on.
Joe was still living there when JPII visited Knock, and he said it was a comedy of errors…
no crowd control, late everywhere…

I suppose someplace in the Midwest would be great. Maybe Chicago.
🤷

Fun to speculate though. 🙂

Let us pray that the next location will be where a great Catholic revival is needed…that is most important, especially nowadays…

I don’t think cities bid for the WYD, but rather, it is assigned by HH based on areas of great ministerial need, that also have good logistics for the masses that would go there.

IMNAAHO, Africa is unlikely due to great distances and immunological concerns. Ireland is in Europe, which will just have had the last one.

Latin America is unlikely because Brazil held the last one.

NA is a strong possibility, but probably a more Catholic city than ATL; possibly Miami (it has never been held in the US south), New Orleans, or even LA.

South Africa could happen maybe, but otherwise I wouldn’t think Africa is likely - lot’s of contagious diseases, many conflicts and a general lack of infrastructure would make it difficult to hold an event like this in most places. Incidentally, anyone here been to one of these in the past?

Been to 3: Toronto, Köln and Sydney. Now overage.

Of the 3, I think Sydney pulled it off the best, although, due to the vast distances involved, they had far fewer pilgrims.

Although it has been held in smaller cities in the past, I believe only a world-class city could do it successfully any more.

I think it should be in San Diego, home of Catholic Answers and family friendly sites like the Zoo.

It’s been years since it was in north America…

I agree. Atlanta handled the Olympics quite a few years ago. Atlanta could handle it easily.

I think South America would make more sense. Turn out would be huge, and it would be accessible for many young people lacking the means to travel to Europe. It also gives the Pope an excuse to travel home, and it would be a huge economic stimulus to a place that could use it.

Mexico City might be a compromise location.

Geographically in NA; near to CA and SA; the largest Catholic city in the world; home to Guadalupe. :)🙂

Except the Pope does like to engage ON -Catholics when he can. He might like that there are lots of non-Catholics nearby and watching. 😉

probably not Latin America because it was there last time.

Asia is a possibility, same with US. was in Toronto in 02, so probably not Canada
