NFP advice please

I disagree. The term “all day long” gives off the idea that one has to make special trips, perhaps at least every hour.

Just to quell the OP’s fears… I don’t think ANY method requires making special trips to the bathroom… 😉

Ha ha…the OP has no such fear, but if I did, you would have definitely laid them to rest.😛

Thanks for your info on STM. I also like having multiple signs to look for, but I don’t think my wife is too crazy about checking cervical position, so that would knock us back down to two signs. I guess either method would be fine, it just feels like a big decision especially since we feel like we have no room for error now.

Well many STM users I know are squeamish on the cervical position sign.
HOWEVER… I must say… that once I learned it during my first postpartum time, I found it was an extremely ACCURATE sign and I tend to get the best information from that sign, in particular. So, it takes a while to get used to, but overall a useful sign. 👍

As far as cost, you can ask for assistance to augment the cost for a CCL course. It is a fairly non-evasive form and as long as there is a financial hardship it is approved from the local chapter. If they can’t assist, they will forward it to the main office that may also be able assist.

As far as being taught by couples, the CCLs instructor training program has been approval by the USCCB’s Natural Family Planning Program. As a matter of fact, CCL is the first NFP provider to be endorsed under their new standards. I wouldn’t be concerned with it being taught by couples…

Regarding the research, there is plenty to support both methods. Both have around the same Method effectiveness depending on what study you use – around 99.6%. STM has a little higher user effectiveness (98.2 vs 96.8). It really comes down to personal preference and comfort level. We personally use the STM.

I would ask what the unit of analysis is for STM. I know the 96.8% for Creighton is 96.8% of couples who use the method do not have an unanticipated pregnancy. I think the 99.6% for STM is 99.6% of sex acts do not result in unanticipated conception. That’s a very different figure. I may be wrong about this though.
 
Have you asked how she feels about checking cervical position? I never did when we were using STM but probably would if I needed even more certainty that I was past ovulation.

Oh my gosh I feel like I’ve been living in a cave. This is the first I have heard the term Creighton. I took a class in the Billings Ovulation Method (boma-usa.org) which sounds very similar to the Creighton Method. I never really felt confident in my readings and also felt that I have very small windows of opportunity for sex (each person is different… even with the same method one person might have more opportunities than another based on their signs. And right after you have sex you have to wait a day or so again because semen can ruin your readings).

I hope you are able to find something that works for you. I got so fed up with NFP. The couple that taught the class I attended were from my church. In case you are wondering, it was not expensive at all. I paid one small fee, like $20 and they gave me charts and stickers and even asked me later if I needed more. The man was even my son’s pediatrician so he was an actual medical doctor. The couple said they did the sympto-thermal method originally but didn’t like it and started using the Billings Method which they started teaching other couples. It is not easy to find but I ordered the Billings Method book online from the website (it’s from Australia). I don’t even know how much I actually read as I got very frustrated.

To this day I do not know what to do. Mostly I just avoid sex and I feel guilty about that, too. I have talked to multiple priests about my issues and have received very different advice. One says keep with NFP. Another says birth control in my case would be a venial sin due to my struggle with NFP. Another says have your husband get a reversible vasectomy (husband is not Catholic). I may have to look more into Creighton and see if it explains anything better for me. Good luck.
