I hope it is ok to post this here. I figured the title was too much for young ones who might see it on the family life tab.

Anyway, my question is concerning the morality of cervical observations in nfp. While checking the cervix when seriously trying for children is clearly not condemned by the church, If done without serious intent to mark observations doesn’t checking the cervix become a near occasion of sin? For example if a woman is just keeping tabs on the state of her body, or is just curious, wouldn’t this be close to masturbation? Where is the line drawn?

This is a serious question and it’s a bit embarrassing to ask, so please don’t think me prude. I’m legitimately confused about this.

There is no abuse of your faculties and you’re checking the health/state of your body. Masturbation is the deliberate abuse of your faculties.

ARe you male or female?

I think intent matters. ARe you doing it for pleasure or to check fluid?

I haven’t done this method. But I’m curious about the morality of it because I know it’s used in the nfp community. If I were to begin this method it does seem like it comes with risk of the near occasion of sin. But I was hoping to get church teaching on it.

In general, the way a person would check her cervix for fertility or health reasons is very different from how she would try to seek pleasure. It’s also normally a quick thing to check. If the purpose of the check is to understand what’s going on with the body, that wouldn’t be sinful.

If you have temptations strong enough that you think this method could cause real issues, then I would avoid it. The act alone is fine. It is a method accepted and taught by the Church. But there are other less invasive methods that you could use. My wife doesn’t do cervical checks because she just doesn’t like to. We use temp, mucus, sensations and that is enough data to successfully use NFP

This isn’t “close to masturbation”. It isn’t even on the same planet. It is a simple check of cervical position, it takes 5 seconds. It is a clinical action, not a sexual one.

If I remember correctly, you suffer from anxiety and are seeing someone for that. These thoughts could be originating from a place of anxiety/scruples. Perhaps discuss them with your counselor.

Cervical observation is always a complementary sign in some methods, and never and mandate.

The best is to avoid it for reasons of respect of our bodies and for health reasons. It is a delicate area that can be wounded or infected easily.

you are allowed to check your own body for your own health. That is not a sin. A woman should be familiar with her own body.

I am not sure what a cervical observation is. But this reminds me of the way people thought in the past.

Some mothers would yell if their kids even so much as examined themselves to see what was there. Talking about it or asking questions was discouraged.

thank you for that astute observation. No wonder I could never find it

All joking aside,

I asked the OP if they are male or female but the question seems like something a male would ask. B/c i’ve joked about this same thing with my wife before
