Hello-
I’m getting married in two months and my fiancé and I are learning NFP now. I’ve been reading threads on these forums regarding NFP and honeymoons and they have all been very helpful so thank you!

My question is this - I have long cycles (usually 31-34 days or so) and so far, there is very little time between Phase 1 and 2 before mucas starts showing up. But it’s not the kind of mucas in Phase 2, at least I think (its just slippery but not stretchy or tacky even). The cervix is still closed so I am very confused. I don’t have enough cycles to use the Doehring rule yet but my temps usually rise around Day 20-23. Is it acceptable, eventually, to use the Doehring rule even when mucas is present? And do other women experience this type of cycle?

I appreciate whatever feedback anyone has 🙂 .

I suggest you talk with your instructor and go over your charts together.

I use Creighton so, I can’t speak to the rules of Sympto-Thermal.

Your cycles sound very similar to mine. I caution you against using the Doering rule if you don’t have enough charts recorded. If your cycles are always very regular and have been forever, then you might try, but know that is improper usage of that rule so if it “fails” it is not the rule’s fault.

It sounds to me like you need to focus on your observations of CM so you can interpret that better with more confidence. I usually start out with tacky and then it gradually changes to more streatchy and slippery as I move into the fertile part of my cycle. If you have constant CM that does not change at all throughout the entire cycle, you should check your health and/or diet to see if something is wrong because that is not normal. Originally I had problems telling the difference between the different types, but it gets easier with more experience. I also ate one big raw carrot a day to help with my vitamins and that really helped.

Thank you so much for your response. I do think it will take more practice but I love the carrot idea. I’m up for that!

My wife and I have a similar issue. My wife always produces mucus, there is never a dry period. She does go from M to S to S-, but it’s never a D. We just use the 20/21 day rule for the transition from Phase 1 to phase 2 and we don’t worry about mucus unless it becomes S. It has worked fine for us.

Do you have sticky cm all the time? I think there is a rule where your BIP (basic infertile pattern) could be sticky instead of dry…

Marauder - What is the 20/21 day rule?

mrsfrazier - Its tacky more than not. Dry days only happen during phase 3.

I think there is a book (author Shannon I believe?) called “Fertility, Cycles, and Nutrition” that would help eliminate the tacky/sticky in phase 2 with dietary changes.

In this case you might have to chart for several cycles and see if you can determine how many days of tacky you have before wet/creamy, and then maybe base your safe days in phase 2 on that (which is a little more risky than just avoliding).

Sorry I went on vacation when you asked that question.

21/20 Day Rule: The end of the preovulatory infertile period (the last evening safe from risk of pregnancy) is the minimal cycle length (of the last 6-12 cycles) - 21 OR minimal cycle length (of the last 12-24 cycles) - 20, provided it is a dry day. Keeping track of cycle length for more than 24 cycles is unnecessary. Slightly more conservative than Last Dry Day Rule.

Thanks for this! I hadn’t heard of it before and I’m just trying to learn all I can. Much appreciated.

I had and have something that sounds similar, and eventually figured out that I basically have a baseline level of yeast that is a non-sticky, non-tacky, whitish to off-whitish discharge. No amount of creams or prescriptions ever gets rid of it completely, and while I do suffer the occasional itch, I can tell a difference when it gets so out of control that I need treatment.

Sorry if that is tmi…
