Does anyone else have trouble charting? My temps are so low, half of them don’t even register on the chart. Then I had “breakthrough bleeding” this month on days 11-16, what is a person to do? I just had a baby 4 months ago and I’m afraid to have sex w/ hubby because I can’t tell anything from my charts lately. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!!

I would suggest you visit forums.delphiforums.com and visit the site nfptalk. This forum is specifically for NFP and has many people who practice the different methods as well as instructors who can advise you. It is a Catholic group, although there are some non-Catholics on the board too.

This may be encouraging…My daughter and her husband just had their fifth child (the oldest is six) 🙂 and she had breadthrough bleeding on day 11 of her third cycle postpartum. The baby is 3 and a half months old. That cycle ended up being 35 days long, with the luteal phase being a normal 14 days. She was fertile around the 20-23 days of her cycle. So the follicular phase was long. Now this month she’s fertile around day 16, so her cycles seem to be getting normal again after the baby.

She says that postpartum cycles are longer than normal usually.

I guess what I’d suggest with what I know is that the mucous signs are more reliable than the temp. My daughers temps were weird for a while after the baby too.

Good Luck,

I’d advise you to contact your NFP teacher. I don’t know if you took the course from Couple to Couple league, but I know that they are always more then willing to help.

I know what you mean about troubles after having a baby. My wife just completed her 3rd full cycle after pregnancy and it was a interesting one. Temperature variation all over the place and during the most important part of the cycle for determining rule C we had a doctors appointment with 4 shots, needless to say, those 2 days were disturbed. This was also the first longer cycle (by 7 days) since pregnancy so my wife was so nervous she had to take a pregnancy test. Of course her period came a day later.

The biggest advice I have heard is that after pregnancy your body is still returning to normal. It can take several months for this to happen. You will see strange things in your charts, especially if you are ecological breastfeeding (which we aren’t.) We have noticed, weird fluctuations but the overall pattern is still there.

If you have any questions feel free to PM, but we are still new to this also.

What kind of baby-care is the infant getting? By that I mean, are you fully breastfeeding the baby, with a great deal of mother/baby contact? The return to fertility after childbirth is the most confusing time in a woman’s fertility cycle, and is greatly affected by the kind of baby-care you provide. If the baby is feeding frequently, that will effect how fast, and how fully your fertility will return. I would encourage you to contact your nfp teacher and have them help you look through your cycles. If you cannot contact your NFP teacher, my wife and I teach for the Couple to Couple league, and you can contact me via email and I will see if we or a couple near you can give you some help.

Pray for God to give you patience and perseverence. For all couples who practive NFP, what your are experiencing is the most trying time. “Do not be afraid” (Pope John Paul II), for there is help available.

Pax Christi,
John

I just want to point out that if you are breastfeeding, your symptoms will vary considerably and I wouldn’t worry about it. If you took classes through CCL, you can reread the chapters on the return of fertility, contact your teaching couple, or other teaching couples in your area. They will be happy to review your charts (for free).

Breakthough bleeding is also common during return of fertility. It is often called a “warning period” and is a sign that your fertility may be returning. If you are not using “ecological breastfeeding”, four months is normal for a return of fertility.

Best advice, don’t worry, but learn how to detect the return of fertility so you can feel confident in your observations.

Our NFP teacher will actually review our charts for us and tell us when we are fertile. She is a nurse at a Catholic hospital. We haven’t actually been sending the charts in though. I know there are other NFP promoters out there willing to perform the same service.

This may not be particularly helpful, but I will just say that my wife’s temps are almost always so low they are off the chart, but they follow the pattern they’re “supposed to” when tracked, so it hasn’t been a problem for practicing NFP.
