I have read that it is possible to use NFP charting to try and choose the sex of the baby you are hoping to conceive…

has anyone tried this?

And before anyone gets angry and tells me that that choice should be left up to God, I know that. I am not talking about using some artificial means to choose the sex absolutely.

For me personally, I would love to have a little girl. But that does not mean that I wouldn’t feel blessed to have a little boy.

I have heard that it is more statistically likely to have a boy, all I want to do is try to even up the odds.

Please keep your negative opinions to yourself, or start a new thread. I am interested in hearing from people who have tried this and whether it was successful or not.

I do not know where you heard that statistically you are more likely to have a boy, but from what I remember of biology that is not correct. In fact, there are more women in the world today then there are men. It is pretty much 50/50.

My understanding is that the female sperm cells actually swim faster and are stronger than their male counterparts. They also live longer. I have heard that having sex as close to ovulation as possible will increase the chances of having a boy. Having sex a little before ovulation betters the chances for a girl. The theory is that the male sperm cells die off, leaving the female sperm cells to do their thing. My wife and I have three daughters. I guess we just couldn’t wait.

😃

I have also heard that its possible with NFP. With horses the male sperm cell is the fastest. The female spem cell is slower. So if you want a filly, breed the day after ovulation :yup:

I read that further study of this ovulation timing theory did not show any difference in humans. But I don’t remember anything more about details of the study.

For what it’s worth, I did read that in general older men have more female offspring statistically than younger men. Then there’s the statistic that more males are born than females, but the males die younger which accounts for the higher female population. And then there’s always what Mark Twain said about statistics…

There have also been studies suggesting a link between a vegetarian diet and having girls. I heard it on the news one day, and it stuck in my head because my brother’s wife is veg, and they have four girls.😃 Go on one of those zillion prgnancy web sites and there are tons of “old wives tales” of how to ensure a boy/girl.

You have a 50/50 chance of conceiving one or the other no matter when you copulate. All these ideas are just theories, and there is no evidence to back them up.

Forget biology and rely on statistics. In the United States, for example, there are 105 boys born for every 100 girls. So, yes, it’s pretty much 50/50, but the odds slightly favor a boy.

(Note that males tend to die before females here, so overall there are 97 males for every 100 females).

Funny, I have heard the exact opposite. With the current lack of solid findings, I think I’ll stick to my belief that God ordains the sex of naturally conceived children.

thanks for all of your replies so far.

I would love to hear from anyone who has actually said “we are going to make love on this particular day so we can try to have a boy/girl”.

Did it work?

Around 50% of the time! :rotfl:

Sorry, couldn’t resist.

I was taught that boys swim faster, but girls live longer. So depending on when you do the deed, you can theoretically have good odds for your choice if you do it at the right time.

However, you never know when one little boy fishy will decide to hang on for the right moment. I don’t know anyone personally who tried to choose the sex this way, but I wouldn’t be against doing it! I have two boys and 1 girl, and two sets of bunk beds. Guess which one is empty!!

what be this? 4 males are born for every female in Indonesia.

I mean komodo dragons.

I recall that there were rumors that Prince Charles used this method for his two sons. If so, it worked.

I hope I’m not being too indelicate, but another factor that supposedly had some influence as to the sex of the child was the acidity along the route taken by the sperm in the female, which in turn was affected by whether or not the woman “finished”.

Males may have a higher infant mortality rate (scientifically, this is due to sex-linked diseases which attach to the Y chromosome only) but more girls are selectively aborted than boys. It’s a sick world.

I have read those books which claim that you can choose the sex of your child through NFP. They claim that if you have sex before you ovulate, you will get a girl. Afterwards, a boy.

For being done by feminists, the book is remarkably sexist (it’s not a Catholic book, but an attempt by family planning groups to take over NFP as well). They claim that female sperm is “too weak to swim upstream when there is less fertile mucous”. This is rediculous. Which sperm you get pregnant by has little to do with which one is the fastest, if that were true there would be no birth defects, because all defective sperm would not make it to the egg.

Good point.

I didn’t mean to start a “feminist agenda” discussion. I myself am far from beinga feminist.

My only reason for wondering about this entire topic was one of curiosity. If what I read was true (and I’m not saying it is) then I just wanted to have an equal shot at having a little girl.

I am not pregnant, and don’t have any plans to become pregnant in the near future. I just wanted to know if there was any truth to the theory.

Well, let me tell you what I did to shed some light on this subject. I got married, then had intercourse, and then prayed every day and night to the good Lord for a boy…and I had a boy.

THANK YOU LORD!!!

I got to go, my wife is pregnant again, and I have to say some more rosaries.

Hmm…well I think I actually did get pregnant from a time that happened before I ovulated, and did have a girl, so in that sense you could say it was true for me.

But I honestly think the fact that I was praying for a girl the week before I got preg had a lot more to do with it than anything else.

Malia, I have had no kids, but I do not believe that that would work. I think it is purely by chance that you would have a boy or a girl. I don’t think it leads to either way.
