I am currently using sympto thermal NFP to avoid pregnancy. For as long as I can remember, I have experienced a very long mucus patch (starting sometimes as early as cycle day five or six) and short luteal phases. After reading Marliyn Shannon’s book Fertility, Cycles & Nutrition, I decided to try a couple things in hopes of shortening my mucus patch and lengthening my luteal phase. I recently cut Nutra Sweet out of my diet (I used to consume way too much) and started sleeping with an eye covering to block out all light at night.

I’m thinking of adding supplements to my diet next, but I would like to consult a nutritionist first.

I’m wondering if any other women have successfully alleviated these cycle “problems”. If so, how did you do it?

I quit my awful job, which allowed me to improve my eating habits (I was actually able to eat at least 3 times a day when I quit). I also was on prenatal vitamins for a few months, before my luteal phases lengthened. These simple changes took me from 9-day luteals to 16. My mucus became easier to interpret, as well (I previously had continuous mucus).

I don’t know if my experience with improved nutrition/sleep is typical, but sometimes the simplest things are the ones that work. I hope yours is that easy!

Topically applied Progesterone creams can help, especially if your phase two is lengthened by excess levels of estrogen delaying ovulation.

Please consult your fertility health care practitioner for medical advice. The use of hormones and other such cycle-related treatments should be under the advisement and supervision of a doctor.
