I’m 3 months postpartum and would like to use NFP - I’m nursing exclusively - I know chances are unlikely at this stage that I could become pregnant, but I also know the possibility exists, too.

Hubby really does not want any more children at this stage, and is not really open to taking an NFP course… not that he is against it, just that there is no way he would clear his schedule and make it a commitment. I don’t really know what to do…

Anyway, is NFP still successful during bf’ing? Do you just temp and monitor for EWCM?

Is there a thread dedicated to nfp around here somewhere?

I did not have great experiences with NFP and breastfeeding. I really couldn’t rely on temps because I was waking up 5 times a night to feed the baby. Mucous was hard to determine because it was sometimes constant.

I ended up becoming pregnant when my son was 11 months old before my period even started. I blame it mostly on user error though because I should have been more careful. Not to mention, I taught NFP to myself… I should have taken a class.

Very happy to be expecting a fourth though!!

I would also like to add that I DID NOT have the support of my husband and that made it even HARDER to practice. You MUST get your spouse on board in order to be successful.

My little guy is almost 7 months now and DH and I are are really serious about trying to avoid another pregnancy at the moment. Around 6 months post partum I started to notice some fertility signs coming back… I think you are relatively safe prior to 6 months if you are exclusively breastfeeding. See kellymom.com/bf/normal/fertility.html for tips on lactation ammenorhea. Around 4 months or so I started charting again. Prior to pregnancy I had mostly used mucus observations to determine fertility, but while I’m nursing, I’m not finding a clear mucus pattern so I added temping. My little guy is sleeping through the night at this point so I can get a good temperature read. I would hope in your case that you could use the lactation ammenorrhea method until your little one is 6 months and by then he is hopefully sleeping through the night and you can start charting using temps and mucus.

^my kids did not start sleeping through the night until 2 years old!
