NH killings-ringleader longtime homeschooler

The Boston Globe reported this morning that in addition to being a boyscout and a Mormon set on becoming a missionary Christopher Gribble, the ringleader in the Mt. Vernon, NH killing was a longtime home schooler.

Its in the paper version this morning, I couldn’t find it on line.

Gribble is thought to be the one who hacked a 42 year old women to bits with a machete in front of her 11 year old daughter and then proceeded to slash the girls throat as she tried to call 911. Three others were involved in the attack.

As this spreads it’s going to be very bad news for the pro-homeschooling crowd. Don’t let yourself be caught unaware by this news.

Its in the paper version this morning, I couldn’t find it on line.

The best advice is that those who see a corelation between homeschooling and murder are as silly as those who link toothpaste brand to murder.

You’re being foolish if you don’t think that this will affect homeschoolers. EVERY time a hot news story comes on against any crowd, Mormon, boyscout, priests, jews, blacks, arabs, it affects them. And if theses boys said that the only brushed with crest toothpaste then it’d be bad news for that company.

Go stick your head in the sand. Sorry I cared. When they use this as a reason to ban homeschooling I’ll be laughing.
 
The very best way to not have a head in the sand is to disconnect from “mainstream media” - get your news from alternative sources. It does wonders for clearing the head!

Again, if one bad egg causes “them” to “ban homeschooling”, I will eat my hat.
 
I don’t know this story…I am going to research it a bit. Thanks for sharing, sunshine. I wonder why people do make such connections? I mean, the two are not correlated, but I understand your sentiments…there seems to be a stigma that many attribute to homeschoolers, in a general sense. I have heard it in the media, I have seen it talked about here at work. I know the stigma exists…but why??? 😦
 
One event in Jonesborough made schools enacact saftey policies. One act at Columbine made schools have metal detectors. One event at Virgina Tech had colleges searching dorm rooms and enacting more severe controls as to college entrances.

So, yes, one event by one or two people can have a big difference on the country as a whole. Had this happened in California where homeschooling is nearly illegal already, it would of tipped the scales against it so far that it may never have recovered.

For the first time we’re not talking about a “rogue” child who was sheltered and wasn’t allowed to see the sun, we’re talking about a community model who participated in life. Who, by the means of things, was doing everything “right.” No, this alone won’t get homeschooling banned but it will turn those against homeschooling further away, and tip those on edge against it.

Why don’t they feel that way against public schools? We have been shown that public schoolers can enact this kind of violence…we know that schools are bad. We’ve become jaded to this kind of violence…so any person who’s already an outlier…any person who’s stepped out against public schools and said that they don’t want thier child caught up in it will loose ground when these kind of cases come up.

What’s an alternitave news source going to do when they profile the killers…say that the kid was only a “little bit” homeschoold?
 
I am not a homeschooler, nor really much of an advocate of it, however, I wouldn’t interpret this story as a homeschooling issue. I would think of it more as, wow there are evil, sinful people in every aspect of our culture. RC priests, mormon missionaries, homeschoolers, coffee drinkers, principals, rabbis… whatever. It exists in all facets of society.
 
I think the point is that schooling doesn’t make a difference. :o
There is NO perfect way to raise a perfect child.
Actually, I think therein lies the crux of the issue… we’re talking about placing blame on actions taken by the parents (or any other party) rather than the *responsibility *of the kids themselves. At what point do we go ahead and say THESE KIDS made a poor decision and sinned against their neighbors? Why do we keep having to FIND BLAME outside of their own consciences?

I think this is one area that our society has really fallen away on… not teaching personal responsibility. It’s something that has to be actively taught… by example and by word. Society has taught us that WE (as parents) are responsible for the sins of our children - NO! We’re responsible for TEACHING our children the difference between right and wrong - and at some point it’s THEIR choice to take those lessons to heart or not.

Exactly!

To paint with a broad brush - public schools are bad, homeschools are bad - is an error. There are good and bad people in both groups. There are fantastic kids who come out of public schools and there are whackjobs who come out of the best private schools and everything in between at every other school.

Parents need to be involved and to parent, no matter what the schooling of choice is.
 
Well in all fairness like purple said, when it’s a public schooled kid the press is all over it and other parents are up in arms over how horrible and awful public schooling is is general, so to me it doesn’t seem like that big of a leap.

People like to make things neat and tidy and easy to understand. Public school= bad kids. homeschooled kids= sheltered, crazy, religious fringe wacko kids.

It’s much easier to feel confident about what you do as a parents when the alternative looks really bad. I’m sure there will be lots of "see, this is why I’d never homeschool! " from those who are already against it. It would be the same if it was a public schooled kid “see, this is why I don’t send my kids to school!”

Take it with a grain of salt.

Homeschooling isn’t a magical cure…

…as many people know hs’ers network. This town isn’t far. I’ve driven through this town. At my work (a higher education school) we have hs’ers of all sorts. (those who at 19 read at a grade 5 level, or have huge social issues, to those who should be at Harvard). Some of these kids were familiar with the murderer.

People here are shocked that doing “everything right” including homeschooling and boyscouts and social engagement, and deep religious convictions dosn’t immunize one to committing such an act. Just as many people around are shocked that something happened in Mout Vernon of all places.

I really doubt anyone is going to blame homeschooling for what he did.

People who do stuff like that are have some very basic biological defects, and no amount of homeschooling, public schooling, private schooling, or whatever else schooling will ever change that.
 
All that really matters is that these animals should be locked up, or better yet, shot.
