Nicene Creed GONE

I sometimes attend Mass at a Church where the priest sprinkles us with Holy Water during the Gloria, and instead of engaging the congregation in the recitation of the Nicene Creed after the homily we renew our baptismal vows, like they asked our godparents at our baptism and as we say at Easter. Does something this liturgically incorrect make the Sacraments illicit, or is it actually OK to do this?

This is certainly allowed during the Easter Season. Whether your parish celebrated the Ascension on Sunday or the 7th Sunday of Easter, we are still in the Easter Season.

For what its worth…

…at the church in the town where I went to college, the priest would bless the water and then chant the profession of faith by singing “Do you believe in God the Father…” and the rest of the congregation would respond “We do believe, this is our faith…”. After that was done and the water was blessed, he’d sprinkle the congregation while we sang the Gloria.

There was no Creed after the homily because we had already re-newed our baptismal vows.

The sprinkling with Holy Water is a separate act from the Gloria; there is a separate antiphon, psalm, or hymn to be sung during the sprinkling with Holy Water. (cf. GIRM 51)

I don’t have a reference for this, but I’m pretty sure the Creed is only supposed to be replaced by a renewal of baptismal vows at the Easter Vigil, Easter, baptisms, and confirmations. Regular substitution of the Creed doesn’t sound right…

Well, if it’s not perfectly legitimate, it’s happening at more than one parish, because mine does it too…but only during the Easter season.
