Nihil obstat and imprimatur

Has anyone been through the process of publishing a catechetical text, book of prayers, or some other document requiring a nihil obstat and imprimatur? I’m curious how one gets the process started, how long it takes, how big of a pain in the butt it is, if it’s a process similar to getting a book edited before publishing (with several exchanges of revisions between author and editor), if it’s typically done before or after submitting for publication, etc.

I have not done it before but from what I understand is that you simply contact the diocese office and inquire about it and they’ll either give you instructions on how to sumbit it or they’ll connect you with the priest who deals with Nihil obstats. He’s read your book and give it a Nihil Obstat (if it is found to be appropriate) and he’ll pass it on to the Bishop for the Nihil obstat imprimatur.

I don’t think they can give you a real timetable because I think both will probably want to read the text fully and as busy as most bishops are that could take a while. OTOH, the Bishop may only do a skimming of it, relying on the priest who gave it the NO for the fine detail.
