No wedding mass between Catholic and nonCatholic?

I was informed by my parish priest that our Archdiocese has a rule that a Catholic marrying a nonCatholic cannot have a mass. The ceremony will have readings and vows but no offertory, Eurcharist prayer or Communion We are so disappointed not be able to celebrate our marriage during a mass. Is this common in other dioceses?
 
Yes, it is the common practice. The reason is that it is awkward for half the church to be “out of their element” and unable to receive communion.
