I’m currently involved in a Bible Study on Genesis. We read the story of Noah, the Ark and the Flood.
Does anyone here have any links or book suggestions on finding out more of the historical authenticity of this event. According to tradition and scripture ,the Ark is resting on Mount Ararat(in modern Turkey).
I remember reading something about that a long time ago.
Anyone have any leads on this?
Is the story symbolic as well or a real historical event as I believe?
I remember reading an article about 40 yrs. ago, where scientists had found sea shells half way up mt. everest as well as some mountains in the U.S.A.

We should approach this with caution however. There are claims that Wyatt fabricated and embellished the findings.

People have believed it for thousands of years. Cultures all over the world have a flood legend, and yet today, we are too smart to believe it!
For thousands of years, people believed the sun orbits the earth. Do you still hold to that belief?
If it is not true, why is it in the Bible? Has God been playing a trick on people all this time until now, with our great wisdom, we are able to see through His untruth? What are the credentials of those who tell us it is not true? How do they know?
It is true, it is just not historical.
No evidence of a global flood?
Right.
Besides the almost universal flood stories found in all these cultures, how did fossilized shellfish get on the tops of mountains? How did the millions of fossils become fossils? To fossilize, an animal has to be rapidly burried under great pressure, or else it will decompose. The evidence all points to a universal flood.
A couple of points with your statements. First, fossilized shellfish are in the rocks themselves, so for your opinion to be valid, the rocks must have been formed in-place at the top of the mountains. My question for you would be why did the rocks only form right there on the mountain and not in the valleys? Why are there different types of rocks as opposed to one type of rock with the same fossils throughout? Why aren’t there vertebrate fossils such as horses, llamas, dinosaurs or humans included in the fossil assemblage?

And by the way, Mt. Ararat is a volcano. There are no shellfish fossils on Ararat.

Peace

Tim

Remember that at least as far back as St. Augustine it was understood that we don’t have take everything in Genesis literalistically. The stories teach moral truth, not neccessarily historical and scientific fact (except of course that we are descended form two first parents).

We can use the brains God gave us to understand how the world works with some degree of certainty and even if something appears to contradict what we see on the face of the scriptures, it does not mean they are wrong of course, but perhaps our interpretation of them must be adjusted. I think St. Augustine says something to that effect.

There is a good article from this Rock here.
