This might turn out to be a silly question, but I thought I’d ask all the same… 😊

Can a non-Carmelite consecrated Religious, say a Benedictine, still wear the brown Carmelite Scapular under their habit? Or must they only wear their Order’s scapular?

Don’t think there’s a Benedictine scapular in any event

But I’m sure it’d be fine, at least under the habit - most Brown Scapular wearers are enrolled as children or teenagers, before they enter any religious order per se. And once enrolled, you’re encouraged to wear it for the rest of your life. So I don’t see how it could be a problem.

A lot of religious habits feature a scapular, actually - including the Benedictines. 🙂 Although, in their case, only those wearing the full habit wear it. It is sort of like a long apron worn over the shoulders on top of the tunic. But I don’t believe there is a smaller version of the Benedictine scapular for the laity, as is the case with the Carmelite Scapular.

I didn’t think it would be a problem to wear it, but you never know. . .

Thank you! 🙂

There is a scapular of st. benedict, that associates you with the lay confraternity of the benedictines and their spiritual benefits.
