Non-Catholic Exclusion of the Eucharist

A hypothetical question for you. After the Council of Jerusalem, if some of the Jewish Christians in Antioch refused to obey the decision of the Apostles because they truly believed the decision was wrong, and they started their own "denomination", teaching that the Gentile converts still had to follow all the Mosaic Laws, do you think that Paul would give those that rejected the council communion?
Excellent question. 👍

No, Paul would not welcome false teachers among his flock, and he certainly would not have had communion with them. Judaizers preached that salvation came through circumcision.

Evangelicals who practice open communion offer it to those who profess faith in Christ and believe on Him alone for salvation. It is open in the sense that we do not interrogate every visitor who comes in to see if they meet those qualifications (Paul tells us to judge ourselves), and we certainly don’t require that they be perfect in all points of theology to commune.

But in this scenario, these Jewish Christians would still consider themselves part of the “invisible” Church. They would not believe their teachings were false, after all, Jesus never said the Mosaic Laws would be done away with. It took a ruling from the Church, that was given divine authority to make such a ruling, to settle the dispute. By your standards, since those Jewish Christians would still be believing in Christ, Paul should be giving them communion.

So what you are saying, is that it would not be okay for early Christians to receive communion if they rejected the teachings of the early Church, but it is okay for latter day Christians to receive communion that reject the teachings of a community that believes they are that same early Church, and still holds that Divine mandate to bind and loose. **Communion means community union. **If one were to receive communion in a Catholic Church that does not believe what she teaches, objectively that person is performing a lie, and I would wonder who Christ would think the bigger hypocrites are, the person receiving communion who does not believe what that community believes, or the many Pharisees whom Jesus called hypocrites.

Haven’t read all the replies, but I did want to share my experiences with Lord’s Supper as an evangelical Christian familiar with the non-denominational church world

Re: Non-Catholic Exclusion of the Eucharist

Typically, Communion is offered to all who profess faith in Christ Jesus as Savior and Lord. We are warned to repent of sin and forgive those who have wronged us (so as not to bring judgment upon ourselves)

Which is fine for ALL those churches which do not have VALID Sacramental Ordination based on DIRECT unbroken Apostolic Succession; then holy communion is but a “sign”; “symbol” or a “remembrance”; NOT the Real Presence of Jesus the Christ we Catholics & Orthodox receive.
The reason for this open stance is that it is assumed that all people who have faith in Christ are part of the one and only Church of which Christ is the head.
Actually dear friend is DOES matter to Christ, who even as GOD can and does have logically, theologically and morally just one set of Faith beliefs. Even GOD cannot hold not only differencing, but often contradictory as well faith beliefs. A rhetorical question: IF the RCC is not the One True Church and set of Faith beliefs; than my friend, which Christian faith is? Based on what evidence?
Therefore, it can be disconcerting for someone familiar with this common evangelical, non-denominational view to encounter a church that practices closed communion. The message they get (which is not entirely unreasonable) is that they are not members of the body of Christ, that they are not considered “real Christians”.
Here I both agree and disagree a bit with your position

By intent, design and Divine Will, there is but One True God, Faith and Church which is God’s constant intent from the very moment HE choose just “My People” {Exo 6:7} which Jesus emulated in {Mt 16:18} with “my church” SINGULAR.

The “short course biblical evidence of the above is {TAKING CAREFUL NOTE OF THE SINGULAR TENSE WORDS OF GOD; DIRECTLY AND EXCLUSIVELY TO PETER & THE APOSTLES}

Mt 10:1-8
Mt 16:15-19
John 17:017-22
Mt 28:18-20 {There is of course a great deal more evidence than these few teachings}

Consider this. As a Pentecostal Christian, I have personally gone to my local southern Episcopalian church (where very few people even know me) and when its time for the Eucharist the nice ladies acting as the Episcopalian version of ushers politely invite me to take Communion in something like the following:
“You know you’re welcome to receive Holy Communion as long as you’re a baptized Christian”. I tell them thank you, but no thanks because I’m with my brother who is not baptized and so can’t partake… They then tell me, “Well, you’re still more than welcome to receive a blessing from the priest”
That IS a very kind and OPEN invitation.

BTW: there “priest” are NOT empowered in the identical way, nor to the same degree as are Catholic & Orthodox priest, despite the use of the same term. Hence there offer only a sign, symbol or remembrance
So, many Protestants take for granted their basic unity as members of the invisible Church. It’s jarring for some to realize the Catholic Church strongly objects to this invisible unity, and in many ways, denies that we are united (Just as some Protestants are also quick to deny that Catholics are even somewhat Christian)
No dear friend,

We do not deny the unity through a manifested commonality of belief in God Triune. Our objection {If that’s the proper word???} is that “all Christian faiths are in GOD”S view; “equal.”

Which is the GREATER here?

A promise of a million dollars OR a million dollars in cold hard cash?

Similarly is the Protestant “promise” [presumption} of God’s actual presence verses the REALITY of THEE Real Presence of Christ in Catholic /& Orthodox Holy Communion?

Dear friend, there is NO GREATER reason to be an informed & fully practicing Catholic than the reality of GOD actually, Really, factually in person; being in our midst. Amen!

Another rhetorical question:

Can GOD not do ANY “good thing?” The “Real Presence” is the GREATEST of all possible “good things”

John.6 : 47 to 57
“Truly, truly, I say to you, he who believes has eternal life. I am the bread of life.
Your fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, and they died. This is the bread which comes down from heaven, that a man may eat of it and not die. I am the living bread which came down from heaven; if any one eats of this bread, he will live forever; and the bread which I shall give for the life of the world is my flesh." The Jews then disputed among themselves, saying, “How can this man give us his flesh to eat?” So Jesus said to them, "Truly, truly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of man and drink his blood, you have no life in you; he who eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day.[COLOR=“Red”] For my flesh is food indeed, and my blood is drink indeed. He who eats my flesh and drinks my blood abides in me, and I in him. {WHICH IS PRECISELY WHAT DOES TAKE PLACE IN CATHOLIC HOLY COMMUNION} As the living Father sent me, and I live because of the Father, so he who eats me will live because of me”

Matt.28: 19 to 20
“Go therefore and {YOU} make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe ALL that I have COMMANDED YOU; and lo, I am with YOU always, to the close of the age." {END OF TIME}…… AMEN!

Continued Blessings my friend on Christ

Patrick
