I will try to be as brief as possible in explaining my dilemma. I am very interested in converting to the Catholic Church, but my husband is extremely anti-Catholic. I am still attending my Protestant church for the sake of making sure that my little girl gets to church. Since I do not believe that the communion at my home church is the real Body and Blood, I do not attend on the Sundays when they have Holy Communion because I am concerned with “eating and drinking a curse” on myself (as Paul says). Am I correct in this line of thinking or is any communion better than no communion?

I would appreciate any insight you all can give me!

Thanks -

Pray for your husband that his heart might be turned.

Is it possible for you to attend Mass by yourself or with your daughter? You couldn’t receive Communion at this point but you do recieve Grace being there.

The Communion at the other Church is not anything but a symbol…how could you eat/drink damnation when it isn’t REAL Body and Blood? I see no point in taking part in empty rituals so I would avoid doing so.

Wow, God is certainly tugging on your heart and soul if you are asking this question. I know it is difficult for you in your household at this moment if you decide to begin studying more about the Catholic faith. But keep praying on it. In most parishes, right now the Rite of Christian Initiation classes are beginning. These classes are for seekers and for those wanting to complete their sacraments of Initiation. For Catholics who are fully cognizant of the Real Presence of Jesus in Holy Communion, it would be a mortal sin or a sin against the first commandment for us to partake in a non-Catholic communion service.

You are always welcome to come to mass or come and pray before the Blessed Sacrament and ask Him to lead you in the way you feel you are being called or even attend an inquiry session in most parishes of any diocese. Pray always! I think you already know the answer.

St. Bruno and St. Veronica - Thanks - I definitely believe this is a leading from the Holy Spirit - I had begun attending RCIA classes last fall but had to quit after only a couple of months at my husband’s insistence. I say insistence because he basically put his foot down and said “you can’t go anymore.” The advice I was given was to hold back and wait and pray for the Holy Spirit to change his heart. I attend Adoration very sporadically - and never Mass because I simply don’t have an opportunity to go - also I do not want to “ask” him if I can go so he can keep our daughter because he would hit the ceiling - and taking her with me is out of the question because he told me before that he would have to be “dead and in the ground” before she set foot in a Catholic Church and she is at the age (4) where she would be all to anxious to tell her daddy about visiting a different church!

I have been very reluctant to make a firm stand against my husband because I don’t believe that God wants my conversion at the destruction of my family. It has been very hard for me to discern the line between submission to one’s husband and submission to God - even though that would appear to be a no-brainer. I want very badly to do what is “right” but don’t always know if I am indeed doing what is “right.”

Thanks again for your advice!

One of the best gifts, the Catholic church has to offer is the Communion of Saints. We have so many wonderful stories of saints who were in a similar position like you. Parents praying for their atheist children, spouses praying for their spouse’s change of heart. At times, they were faced with years of what seemed to be unanswered prayers. But in all cases…the Lord led them down the right road…to HIM! Believe, pray and it will all happen!

I will keep you in my prayers as well.

You are right in thinking that you shouldn’t partake of communion from a non-Catholic church. You now know the truth: that the Eucharist in the Catholic church is the Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity of Our Lord, Jesus Christ - how could you settle for anything less than that! You and your family are in my prayers.
