I mean no offense by my question. I am simply trying to understand catholic faith better. Why aren’t priests allowed to marry? I just cant understand why not? I mean there are certain needs every person has, right? And isnt marriage a good thing? Better than say, molesting children? Well I would really like to understand this aspect of your church better, I am a 17 year old teen from California. And do not attend church but I do believe in God

Preists not being allowed to marry does not cause them to molest children.

A preist is supposed to be completely devoted to God. If a preist is married it divides him between his family and God. He has to make a choice. St. Paul said that he desired that all men should be like him, celibate.

Further, a preist is married to the Church. They are devoted to serving the Church like a husband would serve his wife. His whole parish is his children in that he teaches them the way to God.

Actually, in the eastern rites of the Catholic Church a person can become a preist if he is married, but once he is a preist he can not get married. In the latin rite a married man can become preist if he has permission from the pope.

First off, sex is not a need. A need is something that is necessary to survive. Many people all over the world and in many different cultures and religions live just fine without sex. Shoot, I’ve made it 23 years without sex and I’m as healthy as they come.

Marriage is a good thing, but it’s not the only good thing. Living a single life is also a good thing. We’re all called to do a variety of good things.

Saying that people who aren’t married molest children is offensive to all us single folk. Since these molesting priests tended to molest boys, something tells me they wouldn’t have gotten much out of marriage to a woman anyway.

Consider for yourself why Christ never married. Maybe that will give you some insight into the Church’s thinking on the subject. Oh, and the two choices in a man’s life are not (a) get married or (b) molest children. To insinuate that one must do one or the other is very distasteful, and very wrong, and you should know better. Did Christ molest children? Did John Paul II? But I see you’re only 17, and, if you’re like most 17-year-olds, you can’t imagine a life without sex. That’s your limitation, as it would have been mine at your age. But recognize that your view is seriously limited, and that just because you might not be strong enough to live such a life doesn’t mean that other are not strong enough.

Hi curly, priests have a charism or gift of celibacy which is part of their vocation, or calling from God, which gives them the grace to serve the Church more fully without the demands of wife and family. It is a discipline that could be changed theoretically, but given the abuses of sexuality and family life in society today, their witness is crucially needed to remind us that virginity has value. Marriage is a good thing. Virginity or celibacy for the sake of the kingdom of Jesus is another good thing. Some are called to one thing, some to another. For a person called to the marriage vocation to ignore the call for the priesthood or religious life would be just as bad as a person called by God to serve Jesus and His Church to ignore that calling to choose marriage.

Molesting children is a crime and a sin that cries out to heaven for vengeance, no matter who does it. That includes all the married people, or those living with someone in a sexual relationship who make up the largest percentage of all child abusers. marriage or sexual activity does not prevent child abuse. Just for comparison, about 14,000 cases of sexual abuse by about 5000 priests over a 40 year period were identified in an independent study of this problem published last year. Also last year, a scientist studying this problem in the schools found over 200,000 cases of abuse in the New York city school system alone over the last 20 years. Most of those abusers were married or sexually active.

Hi Curly,

I think the question was pretty much answered already - getting married is a good thing but being a Priest is a good thing too and since Jesus wasn’t married he lived a life without sex. We are all supposed to live without sex unless we are married and that’s certainly not something you’ll hear if you listen to the popular culture. Sex is nice - within the bounds of marriage but it’s so NOT a need. Hard for a 17 year old to understand but it’s true. There are more important things in life - like be obedient & living the life God has called you to live, which is what Priests do.
Anyhow, welcome to the forums. And I’m glad to hear that you believe in God, even if you don’t attend church. He believes in you too! 🙂 🙂 🙂
