Hello, my 12 year old daughter was invited to a non denominational youth group, by a friend in the neighborhood. The youth gorup meetings are held at their place of worship and sponsered by the thier church. The neighbor that invited my daughter is very nice, and her family has helped out out many times over the years. We have a friendly relationship. We have even attend performances that have been held at their church for Christmas.

We are all cradle catholics. I told my daughter no, she cannot attend. Both my husband and my daughter think it’s silly that I won’t let her go.

Is there any “reason” that I can give to my family to explain why I am uncomfortable with this - I have a feeling the invitations will keep coming too.

Thank you for your insight.

I wouldn’t let her go either. Your neighbors may mean well, but without realizing it this other church could teach her something contrary to the catholic beliefs. I am involved with FCA (fellowship of christian athletes) and I have to be careful about what they say. It is just better to stick with your own church’s youth activities.

The question is, “is your twelve year-old mature enough in her faith to be in a room of kids and explain her faith intelligently and not feel intimidated by the leader or others?” Even if she were able to hold her own, a youth group is not the place for kids of another faith. My understanding is that the youth group is there to make/keep kids Christian, just not Catholic Christian.

Think about this, how many pagans are there in Latin America? Not many but there are many many Protestant missionaries there trying to steal our sheep. Why don’t they go back to Germany, Scandanavia and Britain and try to convert the truly pagan post-Christian populations there? Our missionaries should do the same in Italy, Spain and France.

Don’t send your daughter to their mission field if you want her to be a Catholic.

A pagan is a polytheist; someone who worships more than one god. I think you mean “atheist” or “agnostic.”
