I have a protestant friend who is beginning RCIA soon and they are interested in attending the Tridentine mass with me. I know non-Catholics in the process of conversion could traditionally attend the Mass of the Catechumens but would leave prior to the Mass of the Faithful given that they are not in communion with Rome.

Is this still proper procedure? Should my non-Catholic friend leave mass following the conclusion of the Mass of the Catechumens?

Thanks.

Ask the priest. I know that the dismissal of the catechumens is still done during the Great Fast.

Are you referring to the TLM or the Eastern rites?

I have never heard of non-Catholics ever being dismissed for any part of the TLM. It is a fountain of grace and mystery from beginning to end (and beyond).

It’s done in the Divine Liturgy. My Anthology has the Litany & dismissal of the Catechumens before the Liturgy of the Faithful, which starts at “Again and again in peace let us pray to the Lord.” R: Lord, have mercy.

“The doors! The doors!” before the Creed was to make sure that no pagan, public sinner, heretic or schismatic was in the Church. Only baptized Catholics in the state of sanctifying grace who were to receive Communion were allowed to stay for the whole Liturgy.

If you couldn’t receive Communion then you were dismissed along with the Catechumens. C.f. My Divine Friend & Anthology.

Are you saying that it is still done in the Divine Liturgy, or that it was done in the past?

I attended a Byzantine Catholic parish (Ruthenian) for about a year, after I was trying to figure out what to do about the Lefebvre excommunications. When I would hear “The doors, the doors, in wisdom let us be attentive”… please forgive me… it always made me think of Jim Morrison… 😳

Afaik, if there are catechumens, then they are dismissed during the Liturgy so they can attend ECF.

P.S. Excuse my ignorance, but WHO is Jim Morrison?

Jim Morrison… the Doors… 1960s rock group:

Sadly, yet one more member of the “27 Club”, along with Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Kurt Cobain, and Amy Winehouse, all gone far too soon.

And excuse my ignorance, but what is “ECF”? I know it has to be Eastern Catholic something.

Eastern Catholic Formation (or when I was growing up CCD, but in the case of adults, RCIA). IOW, catechism classes. 😄

Also, it avoids the “how come you can go to communion but I can’t?” temptation.

Re JM: From his photo, he needed a serious haircut imo. 😄

😱 Thanks for making me feel a million years old.

HomeschooledDad, isn’t it sad–I believe (?) drugs killed all of the talented people on your list, or perhaps I should say addiction to drugs. It’s so sad that people with so much talent and so much fame and money still use drugs. Sigh.

Hey, I’m from the last millennium myself. To paraphrase my late dad: I’m 29 going on 92 (provided this earth lasts that long). (And I turned 29 for the 23rd time this year…) Tempus fugit

How true. And sadly, I am not a “homeschooled dad”, homeschooling didn’t exist in my day (unless you lived out in deepest Wyoming or Montana or somewhere, and did it through Calvert School or something), though I learned far more out of my Britannica Junior Encyclopedias (the red ones) and my radio hobby, than I ever learned in the classroom.

(Please Note: This uploaded content is no longer available.)

The beginnings of a life of autodidacticism.

And drugs are one thing we avoid in homeschool. Never was into them myself.

We had those growing up too ❤️ - and an adult EB set that my godfather got for me when I was a baby. Unfortunately, they got thrown out when we were getting Mom’s house ready to be sold a few months ago.
