Repentance is not penance.

Repentance is not penance.
This must be a problem of terminology then.
When you repent, do you show visible signs of your repentance?
Catholics don’t. As far as I know in the basic form of confession.

In fact, I dont think we should, as there is a warning not to show sadness, in the bible

edit to add

it could be said, its visible for all the peeping tom’s who keep score of who does not go up to recieve…

If one’s conscience calls them to express visible signs of repentance, so be it. If done from the heart I have no problem. But requiring it in order to be forgiven is wholly another problem.

I guess this leads to the next question, are we really outwardly expressing the inward reality in us?

Do we have to? Christ says when we are fasting to be joyous so we dont show it off
Agreed. But evasive.

Do we have to do anything? No.

Do I have to take out the garbage? Do I have to mow the lawn?

Why always ask how we don’t have to do something?

Because we don’t have to do it for salvation. If we don’t have to…then for Rome to teach that we do, is not apostolic teaching.

Hi Syele,

I am confused about one thing, what is it that you can do that is wronging the whole church body only?
Don’t all sins hurt the whole church body?

The reason I ask, is when I did not care about God at all, I felt that christians in general that I met in my life, were no more trustworthy, reliable, honest, or kinder than non christians.

So, what I am saying is- the fact that I was not a christian, but witnessing christians that either did not know or care how to conduct themselves helped convince me that christianity was not worth looking into.

So, while I was not a part of the church body, I was seeing that body go and do things, that they themselves claimed was wrong.

So, in my case- that prevented me from considering being in that body (there were other reasons though- that was not the only one by a long shot, but a big one)

I hope you know what I am saying here. If not, I can try to be more clear.:o
Yes all sins hurt the body, but those that are confessed to the entire body are usually those sins that caused a scandal. In my experience, the smaller churches have more confession to everyone than larger ones. Less for theological reasons though than just ones of adequate time.

I can see that. I wish everyone did that. Scandal is a big turn off for people who are barely clinging to the idea of God let alone strong christians.

😦

Back to original question…interesting question.

While some may say they could never confess their sins to a priest, looking at what goes on out there–confessing sins to other church members or on websites or to psychotherapists–crazy!!! I could never confess my sins to anyone BUT a priest. At least he’ll die before he breaks that seal. Even a psychotherapist can be subpoenaed.

I forgot about that. That does make it more appealing. I hope no priest has had to die to protect a penitant, but its amazing they would be willing to do so. Priests really don’t have an easy job.
Talk about pressure!

TU, between “penance” and “repentance,” we may be dealing with semantics.

There is a glossary in the back of the big green Catechism. (It’s not in the little cheap one, nor the online one.)

Under “repentance,” it says: “See Contrition; Penance.”

“Contrition: Sorrow of the soul and hatred for the sin committed, together with a resolution not to sin again. Contrition is the most important act of the penitent, and is necessary for the reception of the Sacrament of Penance (1451).”

“Penance: *Interior *penance: a conversion of the heart towards God and away from sin, which implies the intention to change one’s life because of hope in divine mercy (1431). *External *acts of penance include fasting, prayer, and almsgiving (1434). The observance of certain penitential practices is obliged by the fourth precept of the Church (2043).”

Emphasis in the original; numbers in parentheses are references to the Catechism.

Do you think that the definitions of contrition and interior penance agree with your definition of repentance?

Hope that helps…

Ruthie
