An excerpt from today’s Gospel:
And none of the disciples dared to ask him, “Who are you?” because they realized it was the Lord.
There are other passages where His disciples do not recognize Him right away. This one causes me concern because it’s not “just” His disciples, who could be among the thousands who never got close enough or been in His presence long enough to know what He looks like.

But these disciples were the twelve. Thomas, James, John… why does the Word state, “they didn’t dare ask, ‘Who are you?’”

Is there something lost in the translation? Does Jesus appear in the guise of someone else? Was Jesus trying to hide who he was?

In John 20:14 Mary of Magdala didn’t recognise him at first. I’ve assumed it was because he is still disfigured from His Passion. And also perhaps because they’re having a hard time digesting the information that he is indeed resurrected.

True. It may also be that she was so overwhelmed with grief she wasn’t looking at Him.

But here, John tells Peter, “It is the Lord.” Peter leaves the boat & swims to the shore. The others come to the shore later, surely expecting it to be Him.

& the Word states “None dared ask”

Why would there have been any confusion who it was?

I’m asking if there may be a translation barrier here, in case someone has read the Greek.

Perhaps it means because they already realised it was him, so they didn’t dare to ask him to confirm it.
