Hi,

Does anyone know what the catholic community is like in nc? More specifically around raleigh due to the quantity of tech jobs there.

Is there a mom’s group at one or more of the churches?

How are the catholic schools? Are they real or just in name only?

Home schooling support? Groups?

How’s the KoC? Are they active?

Adult education courses…teachers good…are there any courses outside of rcia lol?

I believe I have read that the Catholic faith is growing in leaps and bounds in North
Carolina.
 
Raleigh just dedicated a new cathedral and there were many news stories about the growth of the Church there.
 
The Diocese is growing, but it is in the Hispanic areas. We lived down there 4 years in 1995-1999. Squishy back then and was still dominated by non-Catholics not exactly friendly to Catholics. Funny, Glaxo is pulling out of RTP.

As for Catholic schools, the one in Cary was known to be good. We were in the trying to start family stage.

Would I educate my kids there now (still have great friends there)? Not a chance.
 
There is a mom’s group that just formed at St. Michael’s in Cary (it is open to other Parishes not just for St Michael’s).

With regard to schools you may want to consider St. Thomas More Academy when your children are in high school:

I’ve heard good things about the diocesan high school as well, Cardinal Gibbons .

I can’t speak to KOC. I only see them at the Lenten Fish Fries 😃

There used to be a monthly Spirits and Wisdom (basically Theology on Tap) that would meet once a month at a local restaurant and have various speakers. I haven’t been to one in years.

St Joseph’s in Raleigh isn’t in the best part of town but is a very solid church. They have a weekly Novena on Wednesday (with confessions, adoration, and then Mass). It is worth checking out on occasion even if you go to another Parish for your sunday obligation.

For disclosure I go to St. Michael’s in Cary (closest to my house with small children). I do like to go to the Traditional Latin Mass at the Cathederal (first Sunday of the month) when I can.

There is also a small Byzantine Church that meets in Cary too.
 
Thank you everyone for your (name removed by moderator)ut. We are thinking of moving closer to my parents. They are in south carolina. It isn’t a hometown…it is just a place the military stationed my parents before retirement.

I have two very young children. Not school aged yet. So I was hoping for a good community and it sounds like it is similar to here, in las vegas. We actually found a really good community that’s growing here. I wanted to see if we would be lucky enough to find another one for my children. I grew up surrounded by non-catholics and I just wanted to try to give the kids what I always wished for while also giving them the opportunity to know their grandparents…I never had that either…

So, thank you very much for your insight. This will help us find a decent location out there if it is in Gods will.
 
Cary is nice. Both Catholic schools there were solid. North Raleigh is a nice place to live. However, both are very expensive. North Raleigh has St. Raphael’s, which is a really modern church. I like the traditional altar at the front–not the middle–of the church.

I liked St. Joe’s, but it had limited masses and was in a bad part of town. We attended the little Sacred Heart Cathedral. N.C. State’s campus ministry was solid.

The catholic community in the Raleigh area is probably one of the best in the southeast. There are multiple parishes that are well attended and, while I don’t know about their doctrinal orthodoxy as I don’t have any kids, the schools certainly seem well supported. Someone mentioned St. Michael’s in Cary. If it is the same one I am thinking of, it is a pretty large church and has a large attached school. And also as said, the diocese is building a brand new cathedral to complement Sacred Heart.

Again, I can’t help you out with the family-oriented questions, but as for parish community, I’d say it is one of the most vibrant in the southeast, and it is not just among hispanics.
 
I cannot speak much about the Diocese of Raleigh as I am in the Diocese of Charlotte - other than I understand D of R just opened a new cathedral.

The Church has been growing down here like a weed for about 10 years. I am on staff at a large parish of just over 4000 families. On the south side of Charlotte is St Matthew with over 10,000 families - the largest parish in the nation.

As far as adult ed, that is typically hit or miss based on the parish. the Diocese of Charlotte does have a very large Eucharistic Congress and a number of other conferences.
