Can anyone tell me if it is possible to marry a Protestant in the Catholic Church without promising to baptise any children of that marriage in the Catholic Faith?

My understanding of the Catechism leads me to believe this is not possible, but I know of a wedding (I am to be a witness to) where this may happen.

Any advice?

God bless,
Mrs Blurn

From what I understand, the Catholic must do everything possible to assure the Children are brought up in the Faith (this would include Baptism), and the non-Catholic must be aware of this promise.

The real question, why on earth would any Catholic marry someone who would deny Baptism to a child?

Prayers for you!

I believe it is still a part of the Catholic wedding ceremony where you agree to raise any children brought into the marriage in the Catholic faith. At least it was when my husband and I married 8 years ago.

When my mom remarried (some 28 years ago now) she already had six kids and was marrying a man with three of his own. When the priest wanted their word that any children that the marriage produced would be raised Catholic, my mother nearly choked on her laughter. Yeah, like WE’RE gonna have any more kids!!!

Mr. Blurn here. I’m trying to determine if I can stand up for them at the wedding if they have no intention of raising the kids Catholic. I’ assuming I may not be able to.

I wouldn’t in that circumstance. I commend you for standing up for your faith. It must be hard.

God Bless

Each Conference of Bishops can set its own rules.

Ours has the Catholic parties promise to do everything in their power to raise the children Catholic, but not at the detriment of the marriage.

The non-Catholic parties are informed of the promise but it is recognized that they may be very strong in their own faith, sometimes stronger than the Catholics in theirs, and that they have every right to transmit their own faith to their children.

From the Code of Canon Law, canon 1125, at vatican.va/archive/ENG1104/__P41.HTM
“… 1/ the Catholic party is to declare that he or she is prepared to remove dangers of defecting from the faith and is to make a sincere promise to do all in his or her power so that all offspring are baptized and brought up in the Catholic Church;
2/ the other party is to be informed at an appropriate time about the promises which the Catholic party is to make, in such a way that it is certain that he or she is truly aware of the promise and obligation of the Catholic party; …”

A few years back a couple I know convalidatd their marriage with a mass. They had several children. Father noted that he was obliged to ask if they were open to children. A six year old niece in the congregation asked," Does that mean Aunt ____ is going to have another baby. - - - I wish she would get a dog instead." 😃

Is it possible for a Catholic to Marry a Protestant in the Catholic Church without the Catholic promising to everything they can to Baptize and raise their children in the Catholic Faith? No. Ask if the Bishops permission was asked for and received.

My mom might have agreed. At least with a dog you can put them outside much of the time. 😃
