Not being contentious toward my Mormon friends, just very curious

Not here to convince us Catholics that LDS is the one, true religion? That is like saying that the “sisters” that come to see my developmentally delayed sister-in-law regularly are here to “visit” with her. My husband’s family, including him, were LDS. His DD sister was baptized LDS however has attended church with us for the past ten years. (My husband converted to Catholicism 5 years ago.) SIL lives with us, I am her caregiver. Everyone knows that she is on the level of a three year old, including the members of the LDS church. Everytime they come, they act as though I am not telling the truth when I tell them that “Susie” is DD. I introduce her every time so they can see for themselves. I tell them that she goes to church with us and to put a note in their book not to stop by. I am always polite to these women, I tell them that I am Catholic, my husband is now Catholic (his choice) and SIL doesn’t care where she goes to church. I do not want to be unkind to them. I will never be rude, but I feel that they are rude knowing our situation and always coming back. They tell me that LDS respects others religious beliefs however that is far from the truth when they use every method to convert, My husband said that LDS do not allow other faiths to hand out brochures, preach, etc. anywhere near the temple in Salt Lake. He is wondering why Catholics allow LDS missionaries in front of St. Peter’s trying to sway Catholics to their LDS faith. That is not showing respect. “Free agency” is nothing more than lip service. There are reasons that LDS come to this site. Could it be that deep down they want to learn about OUR one, true faith and cannot admit it, like the old LDS gentleman that finally told me that he no longer believes in LDS but he cannot change his religion because of his wife and family. So sad!!

It sounds like your SIL is being visited by visiting teachers from a women’s organization called the “Relief Society.” They would not be trying to convert you nor your husband, but are visiting by assignment and if she was sick, they might bring a meal. If you feel bothered by their visits, you could ask them whom you should call to ask for no visiting teachers to be assigned since you are the legal guardian and make all of your SIL’s decisions for her. They may have you contact the Relief Society president in your local area. They will respect your private property rights.

Or, you could just not answer the door.

I live in the Salt Lake City area. What you said about pamphlets not being passed out is not true, at least not from what I have seen and been given from people on the sidewalks.

I visit here to help people like you not feel so much animosity towards LDS people. There is no need for it. Have a nice day.

Were you quoting someone that said that we weren’t here to convince the LDS is the true church? I don’t recall someone saying that.

Your husband might not have been paying attention, in fact, this past conference there was supposed to be a huge rally near the conference grounds. They were all supposed to come in from other states but thank goodness it rained they called it off. I do remember recieving anti-mormon stuff walking out of SL Bees games and Jazz games. It was on like a Saturday night. I guess they don’t have anything better to do.

These young women were missionaries, not from the relief society. They said they did not know my SIL was DD. I know the dif between missionaries and RS ladies. The young women were missionaries here to convert us folks, they were from Salt Lake City. I invited them in and visited for close to an hour. It was cold out, so I offered them a place to warm up. The older woman with the two young women said that “I must admit, you can never get rid of us LDS” and said that her family were all LDS at one time and have all left the church for other faiths, including Catholic. They did know that my hubby is ex-LDS and asked me if he still went to church with me.

I have no reason to be upset with the members of LDS faith. They do what they are taught and actually, I think us Catholics should go around to all the homes in the neighborhood, including our LDS neighbors. It takes a lot of intestinal fortitude to do what the missionalries do, I appreciate it is a tough life for those two years, young men, 18 months for the young ladies. Something tells me that the phamplets handed out were not by Catholics, we don’t do that as you well know! I am aware that phamplets are handed out that are anti-LDS but NOT on the steps of the temple or inside the gated area. Yes, I have been there several times to hear the magnificant choir.

I have a daughter serving a mission on Prince Edward Island, loving every minute of it but it does get cold. She’ll be home soon, then back to college to finish an Art major.

Not true at all. I would much rather just go to Mass and do my own thing getting catholics to discover their religion. But the comments here about mormons and mormonism forces me to defend the lds church.

And most mormons here are defending and responding to antimormon posts or to posts that they believe misrepresent the lds faith.

Why Me, how can you claim to be Catholic and Mormon at the same time? Do you not realise that the two religions could not be more different?

I am sure you realise that the Mormon theology of the “restoration” could not be more insulting to Catholics, saying as it does that the Catholic church is the result of “great, total apostasy”?

Hi, and thanks for asking. We heard from her today by email. She is in the Canada Halifax Mission, which includes PEI and Nova Scotia and NB. It just so happens that my dad’s cousin, also from Utah, served as the mission president there several years ago and now is serving as the Halifax Temple president. They have crossed paths a few times, not often, but enough that it will be fun to get together in years to come and reminisce since they have heard her sing solos a few times during her mission.

One of my favorite quotes from an authority came from Jeffrey R. Holland when he said, “There has maybe been one day since my mission that I have not thought about it.” That was an experience I think about just as he did. I think back every day. That is no conincidence the two were placed together the way they were. Missions are so great!!

I am not much into sectarianism. I see good in both churches and I try not to get bogged down by doctrine.I also find god’s spirit in both churches. And both faiths have been a part of my life. I see no point in making a choice between the two. I consider myself able to have the best of both worlds.

No one can truly be both Mormon and Catholic. That’s just a fact. Anyone that believes in the book of Mormon or the Mormon faith is not a Catholic, by definition. While you may not believe in getting “bogged down by doctrine” it is the doctrine that is paramount. Religion is not just there to make people feel good.
