Our priest mentioned today during mass that all cups filled with wine were to be present on the altar during the consecration instead of the main chalice only. He said it was something new. What does anybody know about this?

He must be referring to this:

"If one chalice is not sufficient for Communion to be distributed under both kinds to the Priest concelebrants or Christ’s faithful, there is no reason why the Priest celebrant should not use several chalices. For it is to be remembered that all Priests in celebrating Holy Mass are bound to receive Communion under both kinds. It is praiseworthy, by reason of the sign value, to use a main chalice of larger dimensions, together with smaller chalices.

“However, the pouring of the Blood of Christ after the consecration from one vessel to another is completely to be avoided, lest anything should happen that would be to the detriment of so great a mystery. Never to be used for containing the Blood of the Lord are flagons, bowls, or other vessels that are not fully in accord with the established norms.”

(Instruction Redemptionis Sacramentum, 105-106).

Are you saying that once the blood of Christ is present the priest should then not pour it into other vessels in order to avoid spilling the most sacred blood of our Lord? Therefore, if many vessels are needed because of a large congregation the wine is consecrated in all vessels at once? Just trying to understand.

Thanks!

YES

If six chalices are required for Holy Communion under both forms then he should Consecrate six. I would also venture to say (my opinion here) if more than six are required then it might be necessary to reconsider Holy Communion under Both forms for such a large number of Communicants.

I had a similar question. We use three. One of gold and two glass. I know now from Catholic Answers that the glass is not permitted so if six chalices are needed they cannot be glass!

In obedience to the new directives, our pastor has planned to stop consecrating the Precious Blood in the large pitcher/flaggon. In October, we’ll begin pouring the wine into 6 chalices at the presentation. I am so blessed to have such a good and holy and obedient pastor!

Are other parishes going through this change? any advice on the logistics of bringing up the tray of chalices? We’ll continue having somoene or a family bring up the gifts - while the deacon gets the tray of chalices on the credence table, then the priest or deacon will pour the wine into the several chalices and the altar server will take the tray away.

On paper it sounds like what we are to do. I hope that it will flow smoothly. What has been your experience if you’ve made the changes?

yeah that is how it works in my community, the priest pours the wine into the chalices and then the altar server takes the tray away…so alot of parishes are going through this change… cool!😃
