Not paying the right amount

Is it wrong to not give the right amount of change when buying something? My sister and I were buying some things in a dollar store and we were trying to pay the exact amount so we wouldn’t have any change. We were about a dime short so the cashier asked us if we had one buit we didn’t so he just let it slide. I didn’t realize he did this until we walked away from the register (because I forgot I didn’t give him an extra dollar).

Was it wrong to accept this?

No, you did nothing wrong. It was a business transaction. Many transactions can be negotiations. The cashier was within his rights to accept less money for an item. What happened was that you both negotiated terms for a lower price and the cashier accepted it. Nothing even unethical about that.

I will agree that it is not a grave offense because the OP did not realize what they were did until later. It sounds like a mistake or confusion.

I see what you mean about negotiation, but it is probably understood that this is not how business is usually run in dollar stores. If you were negotiating with a manager that might be different, but it is not a flea market or a car dealership.

If the situation above was something they did on purpose to get away with not having to spend more money and decieve the cashier it would be morally wrong. The saving factors here are that they didn’t realize they did it and it was only ten cents.

To the OP: If you still feel bad about it and can’t shake it, go back and just leave a dime somewhere. That might make me feel better haha.

I run a small shop and I do this all of the time.

It is good business and good public relations.

No. It was the clerk’s decision and responsibility if the cash does not balance at the end of the shift.
