Not picking up hitch hikers?

I have hitch hiked to a lot of European cities without any trouble and so have many of my friends.
Everybody knows the bad stories about serial killers, however, this hardly ever happens. It’s one of these urban legends that moviemakers like. This is in Europe though, things might be different here.

I love hitch hiking! Please take me with you when you see me standing somewhere with my thumb up. 🙂
 
LJS, it so happens at the time I saw the hitch hiker here in Michigan there was news of a serial killer on the loose. Also, I live near Detroit which in fact, those things are too common here.
 
I won’t pick up hitchhikers. And I would discourage anyone from hitchhiking here in the states, because that also poses just as many risks.

Its not just about serial killers. There are also robberies, and if you’re female, being sexually assaulted. There was just a report the other day on the local news of someone being carjacked after they stopped to help a hitchhiker, and I don’t live in the worst of crime areas either. I have too much of a responsiblity to my family to keep them and myself safe.

I remember seeing signs on 1-94 stating not to pick up hitchhikers. It turns out it was right near a prison.
 
Jesus also told his disciples to carry a sword, I doubt he meant to pick up a hitch hiker who may be carrying a weapon. Jesus also told us to be harmless as doves and wise as ???, common sense dictates against picking up what may be a dangerious person.

It seems to me that there is a pretty famous parable about this exact type of situation. Also, in the Gospels, Jesus seems pretty much into the whole help your neighbour motif. He also seems to suggest that had you been harmed, you would have been all the more blessed because you were harmed in the name of righteousness.

However, since I’m not in the business of getting young women harmed or killed, I think you made the right call.

You prefectly help your neighbor by calling 911. It’s an option that wasn’t available back then. As a former Deputy Sheriff, my opinion is to call the Sheriff’s Department. We can get them the help they need. If it is someone looking to take advantage of someone else, they are far less likely to do it to us.
 
Some christian friends told me they would pick up a hitch hiker if the spirit led them, I asked them how they would be sure the Holy Spirit was indeed leading them to do so. All their answer frankly sounded like the sin of presumption.

Basically, Jesus was tempted by the devil to jump off a high place because of the promises in the following text, Jesus warned that we are not to tempt the Lord,

Psalm 91 (New International Version)

Psalm 91
1 He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High
will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. [a]

2 I will say ** of the LORD, “He is my refuge and my fortress,
my God, in whom I trust.”
