Not So Catholic, / Christian Music

Does anyone else here, that is claiming to be Christian, or Catholic. Enjoy and prefer not so Christian music? Do you find this conflicting?

I find that most of my music variety is in hate core, and anti-christian hard core music in general.

Does anyone else, have this conflict ?
 
I’ve tried to get into contemporary Christian music and I just can’t. All I can think about is a big Non denominational church and a stage. Like, I can’t get into the stuff.

I listen to all types of music from country to rap and from new music all the way back to Ray Charles. My poor Pandora app is so confused. I can go from listening to Luke Bryan to listening to Beyonce. Lol. I’ve always been this way and the older I get the stronger I get with regards to my faith, so it must not bother me spiritually.

I guess some people will say otherwise, though.

I get the same feeling from most contemporary christian music. I think after a bad experience at Calvary Chapel, the Contemporary Christian music left a bad taste in my mouth.
 
I think it’s fine to enjoy more secular music and even dislike specifically Christian music, but your problem arises if you are listening to as you said “anti-Christian” music or “hate” music. Garbage in, garbage out. What we put into ourselves effects us. So yes, I think listening to hateful music is contrary to your faith and you need to remove it from your life.
 
You really won’t find anything that strictly defines what kind of music a Catholic should listen to. Because really, why should there be? I’ve been told by many here that anyone who says the Church should micro-manage every aspect of their life should have the proverbial millstone hung about their neck.

I don’t know about you but that’s enough for me. As an otaku, the only place that Gregorian chant has for me is in certain original soundtracks. Most of the songs I listen to are Japanese, with everything else outside it spanning late 90s boy bands, rock, emo, some bits of rap, and a childhood collection of Disney songs.

Don’t even get me started on where gospel music is on my list. (Let’s just say the only time I’d rather hear it in my head is when my thoughts are borderline sacrilegious.)
 
I also like anything from country to Beyoncé to classical,dance,European music,asian music etc…
I don’t really like Christian music much except for Susan Boyle or Elvis’s Gospel tunes-if that can be classed as Christian lol?

As for hate/hard core or anti Christian music,do you know what it is that draws you to this?
 
I think that you have realized that you do have a conflict with the music you listen to and your faith or you wouldn’t be thinking about it. This is the Holy Spirit whispering to you…

The problem isn’t if the music is secular or Christian music, but if the themes and lyrics are what you would like to listen together with Jesus sitting beside you? If He wouldn’t enjoy the music you are listening to, you may want to reconsider…because he is there. If you are not sure you can always ask Him directly.

Jesus wants us to grow in holiness as His followers. He wants our whole soul, mind and heart, although we all are facing various challenges with this!

As you were developing your taste for music in the secular world you might not have been aware of the cleverness of the world. Enjoyable beat/sound etc filled with filth. So now this type of music may have a hold on you, yet you are becoming aware. Your responsibility is becoming greater. God Bless you!

What is “hate core”? That sounds awful.
 
My understanding of hatecore is that it’s basically white power music. If you’re in it for the music (not lyrics), then I believe you can find bands that are musically similar, but with different lyrical content.

As a metal fan, that’s what I’ve had to do as I became more Catholic. I went out and found similar bands musically that are singing about less objectionable topics. Sometimes specifically Christian topics and sometimes just not anti-Christian. With the internet and the massive proliferation of bands now, it’s not hard to do.

If it’s actually the lyrics themselves that you’re enjoying, well, then yes, you’ve got a pretty substantial conflict IMO.
 
Every time I hear the words “Christian music,” I think of South Park’s Christian Rock Hard where they parody the way “Christian” artists cram Jesus into their music in such a cringe inducing way. LOLOL, puke.

But I certainly wouldn’t care for any type of anti-Christian music.
 
Most Hate-Core, I listen to is for the strait edge aspect of it. Not so much the national socialist aspect.
Though most strait edge scenes chase out Hammer Skins. But, I don't really know any other music more aggressive then hate core.

I really don’t recommend thinking like this. All this talk of treating ‘the world’ like it’s some religious bogeyman doesn’t sound like the sort of charitable spirit constantly preached about by the Christian faith. You can say “Be in the world and not of the world” till you’re blue in the face but that doesn’t change how badly that concept has been put into practice.

And really, can we all drop the WWJD mentality? Jesus was a Hebrew. Most likely the only music He ever heard came from asors, timbrels, and sofars. Questions like this are no more insightful than asking whether the Virgin Mary would wear pants or if George Washington would eat at Chipotle. Frankly, your answer is gonna be goofy at best and at worst, it’s gonna be more blasphemous than any ‘hatecore’ song.

I for one would find it incredibly awkward if Jesus sat next to me while I was singing “Aloha, E Komo Mai” or the opening lyrics to “Circle of Life.” You’re not gonna attribute that feeling as a cause to condemn these otherwise harmless songs now are you? :ehh:

Ah, interesting! I didn’t realize there was a straight edge component to it. Well, there’s definitely a certain level of overlap with Catholic teachings there (the whole abstinence thing).

I went to a local straight edge show once. Those guys were…intense.

I do like SOME Christian music. Some of the songs have been really uplifting for me (more so during the holidays, lol). But I am with you, it makes me think of the modern non-denominational churches that try to make God “cool.” Nothing wrong with it at all, but it does give off that impression.

Musical preference doesn’t affect me spiritually, either. (that I know of :rolleyes:)
 
I can relate to an extent. I don’t usually listen to most christian music stations mostly because…most of the songs sound very similar to each other, as if they all went to the same music school or something. A lot of what I hear on christian radio stations are contemporary, hard rock (usually with a lot of emo undertones), then there’s christian pop that tries to imitate todays Kiss FM music -_-
If I’m craving some christian music, I’ll usually listen to some gregorian chants or russian orthodox chants 🙂 They do a better job of turning my mind heavenward.

It would seem, at least to me, that they focus so much on the message, which it good and all, but they seem to lack the same effort for musical quality a lot of times. A lot more “secular” music seems to care more about the uniqueness of their sound (though, in regards to a lot of today’s pop music, that statment may be questionable for most).

I wont try to listen to music with bad messages though. I try to always listen to music that empowers and invigorates me.
