Not supposed to pray for your own personal peace?

The title of the thread pretty much says it. I don’t remember where, or if I even did ever read it, but something unsettling sticks in my mind lately…that it’s wrong to pray for peace within your own mind and soul. How can this be? Wouldn’t God want for us to feel peace? This can’t be right. Someone enlighten me. I must be misunderstood. And Jesus is always telling us…“Do not be afraid” and that if we come to Him, we will find rest. To believe it’s wrong to pray for your own peace, wouldn’t this be just plain awful?:confused:😦
 
It’s completely understandable to pray for your own personal peace, especially when you’re asking Jesus for the rest that He gives. 🙂
 
I agree that can’t be right. Especially since we’re pretty sure that prayer would be in agreement with God’s will “I give you my peace.”

Seems to me, the best way to be a peacemaker (aka “children of God” - Mt 5) is to be at peace yourself. I can’t think of many higher priority things to pray for.

Like they say in airplane safety talks, put on your own oxygen mask, before helping anyone else.

This plays right into the popular prayer of St. Francis about peace: If you do not have peace, your presence isn’t likely to bring peace to others.

Lord, make me an instrument of Your peace. Where there is hatred, let me sow love; where there is injury, pardon; where there is doubt, faith; where there is despair, hope; where there is darkness, light; where there is sadness, joy.

O, Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console; to be understood as to understand; to be loved as to love; For it is in giving that we receive; it is in pardoning that we are pardoned; it is in dying that we are born again to eternal life.
 
We are bombarded by misinformation. It’s the artillery of the devil in the spiritual battle.
Don’t get shell shocked. Keep remembering the war is won.
 
“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart; and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy,…” Matthew 11:28-30
 
The comments you have received are all accurate and wonderful.

My heart grieves that such misinformation has given you anxiety and worry – this is not the way of Jesus! My heart grieves that such misinformation and plain untruths are keeping so many well-meaning people from seeking the truth and warping their views of God.

It reminds me of a saying from a former professor: “We spend the first 40 years of our lives gaining information and the next 40 years getting rid of the misinfomation we accumulated”

Maybe they meant by that that by living a life for, thru, and in Jesus, his peace will be there for us. And especially in Holy Communion we have him who is peace itself…“my peace I give to you, my peace I leave with you.”

May the Good Shepherd fill you with his special blessing and peace.
 
Thankyou for your replies, everyone. I kind of had a feeling this couldn’t be true, but just thought I’d make for certain. I feel so much lighter now, on this topic:)😉
