My wife works for an orthopaedic surgeon and she brought home a couple sample packets of a medication for pain (because I was having some leg pain). I’m worried I might have commited a mortal sin because I took them even after my leg pain was gone because they made me feel good.

I don’t want to say the medication name but it is not an opiate painkiller or anything (obviously because they give out samples)

Did I commit a mortal sin?

No, there was no sin. …the real question is health related…should you be taking medication if your not ill?..I dont think its a good idea.

1857 For a sin to be mortal, three conditions must together be met: "Mortal sin is sin whose object is grave matter and which is also committed with full knowledge and deliberate consent."131

1858 Grave matter is specified by the Ten Commandments, corresponding to the answer of Jesus to the rich young man: "Do not kill, Do not commit adultery, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Do not defraud, Honor your father and your mother."132 The gravity of sins is more or less great: murder is graver than theft. One must also take into account who is wronged: violence against parents is in itself graver than violence against a stranger.

Hope that helps.

It’s not a wise behaviour certainly - and I hope you’ve ceased. Did these pain pills have a serious effect on you? Make you really loopy? :hmmm:

I’d liken it to alcohol - having that extra glass when you know you shouldn’t isn’t a grave sin - well, not unless you know you’re going to be driving, or it becomes that glass too many every day or something. Having an extra half a bottle when you know you shouldn’t is a grave sin.

I would encourage you to bring this to your confessor.
