Note to my fellow Catholics: please don't call a statue of Mary "her"!

I have yet to read a single official document that requires us to refer to the image of Our Lady as “it.” I’m puzzled as to where the OP’s idea originated.
Let’s use common sense here. There isn’t an officialdocument for every little thing that Catholics do or not do. Some things are customs.

As to referring to a statue by gender “he” or “she” is would agree that the possibility of creating scandal is minimal except in the mind of someone who wants to see scandal. I lived in the City of Stutues and Monuments, Washington, DC. We called each one by name and gender. When you enter the Lincoln Memorial you tell those who don’t know, “That’s Abe Lincoln.” You never say, “That represents Abe Lincoln.”
