Dear Brothers and Sisters,

Yesterday the Bishops of the USA began their Meetings in Baltimore. As we continue our 33 Day Journey of preparation to Totally Consecrate ourselves to Jesus through Mary, please let us also remember to pray for all the clergy – especially those in authority, for they bear a heavy responsibility to tend the flocks entrusted to them.

The Pope has been given the title: “Servant of the servants of God” and as we read this morning’s Gospel we hear Jesus’ reply to his first disciples when they asked him to increase their faith. He told them if they had faith like a mustard seed they could tell a mulberry plant to be uprooted and cast into the sea. Jesus goes further and tells them a parable about “servants”. There is much to be heard in this 17th chapter of Luke, but I want to stress “servanthood” this morning in light of the Church’s call to holiness – we are ALL called: clergy and people together as One Body of Christ. Jesus came to serve not to be served!

Having related the parable to his disciples Jesus then tells them and us:
“…When you have done all you have been commanded, say,
‘We are unprofitable servants;
we have done what we were obliged to do.’”
The world in which we are living does not have the spirit of Jesus; the spirit of the world is selfish. The world wants to be served, not to serve, but to do as little as possible for anyone but “self”. There is a lust of the eyes that wants more and more for its own comfort, , and the lust of the flesh that is likewise never satisfied, so that the world’s spirit will forever be dissatisfied because it lacks the one thing necessary: relationship with God.

If we are seeking to "empty ourselves of the spirit of the world which opposes the spirit of Jesus, we need to do as Mary did and ponder everything Jesus said and did, in order to know how to serve God and others as Jesus did. Mary told the servants at Cana: “Do whatever He tells you”. If we do not listen and ponder God’s Revelation in Scripture, Tradition and the Magisterium of the Catholic Church, then we are prone to the deceit of the evil one as our first parents were. We cannot serve two masters – By God’s Grace, each one needs to choose God over self.

Come Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of Your Faithful. Kindle in us the Fire of Your Love.
Jesus, we trust in You! Mary Mother of the Church pray for us: Clergy and people – your children given to you by Jesus from His Cross. Help us to be true servants as Jesus and you and dear St. Joseph have shown us.
