Nov. is month of Mary in S America?

Recently, my non-Catholic neighbor asked me if I knew if the month for Marian devotion was in Novemeber in the southern hemisphere instead of May bc their seasons are reversed. They will be in winter while we are experiencing summer.

I said I would ask and get back to him.

Incidentally, I have been praying for help from the BVM and wearing the Miraculous Medal (until the chain broke a couple days ago). I was praying for an opening so I could talk with these neighbors about setting the record straight on proper devotion to Mary. I am pretty good friends with them, but the lady once told me, “She’s (Mary, that is) not the Mother of God!” and a few other anti-Catholic phrases. Well, this may be a way I can witness to/through the husband. He is from S Amer., and his mother (whom I also know, and who lives nearby) was raised Catholic, but has fallen away. I am praying for her re-conversion also.

It’s possible they have been praying for a way to tell me how bad it is to “worship” Mary! But I’ve been studying apologetics and am prepared how to answer.

I am doing mission work in Bolivia S.A. and I dont think the November is the month of Mary. I think it´s May, just like in the states. I could ask though. The statue of Mary was adorned with flowers and things during the month of May, but then I go to a Salesian Church and May is the Feast of Mary Help of Christians which is the patron of the Salesian order.

We don’t change Easter round because it doesn’t coincide with the beginning of Spring here :nope: nor Christmas even though it’s the middle of summer, so why would we move Mary’s month?

My response to my neighbor so far has been that since ‘catholic’ means universal, I don’t see why the month should be changed around; you folks down south will be celebrating along with the rest of the world.

I sincerely hope this bears good fruit and that (my neighbor) will ask more questions to learn the Truth of our Glorious Catholic Church!

Yes, I am fairly sure this is the case. They are fundamentalist and do not seem to know much about authentic orthodoxy (Latin rite). The wife (who is my friend, despite religious difficulties), did spend some time in a Catholic girls school, but she was rebellious at the time (by her own telling of the story) and I’m sure was not getting good catechesis. Her mentor at that time, who she still keeps in contact with,is a former woman religious. She left and married. BTW, these are college educated people, world travelers, both speak several languages, so they are not people who one could not engage in a discussion, although perhaps emotions could get in the way.

I thank you for your prayers- pray that their hears AND intellects will open to the Truths of the Catholic Church, the church that Jesus Christ founded! For myself, I pray for charity and clarity of thought (if and when I do engage them in dialogue).
